Yesterday a buyer opened a return case on a unique cassette recorder I sold her back in September. She said it wasn’t working for her and wanted a full refund. It sold for $80 so it would be a decent hit to absorb.
My understanding is that eBay returns are allowed 30 days after the buyer receives the item. All of my listings are set up as No Returns. I only do this as a way to discourage too many but I of course accept returns because you don’t really have an option and at the end of the day I want my customers to be happy.
I called eBay and they said that because it was beyond 30 days since they received the item I didn’t have to accept the return. They also assured me that any negative feedback that could result from this would be removed. I reasoned to myself that if I attempt to return something beyond a retail store’s return window that I am out of luck, so why should my business be any different.
It is unfortunate that the item didn’t work for them. I tested it and it appeared to be fine but I didn’t own any of the special tapes it plays to be able to fully test it. It was listed as used and not For Parts.
So I declined it because it was beyond the return window. I was hoping eBay would just end the return request because I don’t want the buyer receiving an email saying that I declined their request. I also don’t wan’t to get involved in messaging back and forth to explain why I declined it. I do feel bad however because I know how it feels on the other side. Also, because I’ve worked very hard to do everything I can to do the right for my buyers. Am I making too much of this? Should I just move on and hope for no feedback on this one?

Let’s be Robots:
–Under hassle free returns, the buyer has 30 business days to open a case. This is about 45 actual days.
–This customer had the opportunity to test the item and return it with eBay’s time frame and chose not to.
–When I go to Walmart and purchase an item I have 30 days to take it back. If I don’t return it within that period, that’s my fault.
–The logical solution is to let eBay’s policy handle the situation which is what happened. Case closed. No return. You, the seller, are protected.Let’s be human:
–If you want the person as a repeat customer, you could take the return.
–If you feel you sold a broken item and your conscience keeps you up at night, you can take the return. Two caveats:
–Even if you say “no returns” on your item, the buyer can always start a return for “item not as described” This trumps your “no returns”.
–If the buyer thinks they’ve been cheated, they can also open a case on Paypal because they can claim you sold them a bad product. I think they have 180 days to do this. -

I had a similar situation. A buyer bought a video game and then just over 30 days later opened a return for item not as described. I declined the return, since they had plenty of time to test it and return it previously. The buyer immediately left negative feedback, saying “Item was defective.” I called eBay several times, but so far they refuse to remove the negative feedback. Beware, as you might run into the and thing.

I had a return request last week for a pair of $70 shoes. I also have returns turned off. Normally I take all return requessts no problem, but the person went out of their way to lie. They said “ordered by mistake. It just arrived”. My BS meter went off so I checked their buying history. Sure enough they found and purchased a cheaper pair 20 minutes after buying mine. They could have written me then and cancelled. They could have also just been honest and said “found a cheaper pair”. I would have been cool with that.
In the end I just ignored the request. No further contact from buyer. Am I a jerk? Eh, probably. I don’t feel bad at all though. I am a robot…BEEP!

I had a similar thing happen a few weeks ago on a $24 video game. Buyer said it did not work and opened a return case 40+ days after delivery. I decided to accept the return but kept a very close eye on the status. 10 days later the buyer still had not shipped the item back, I called ebay, they closed the case and all done. In this case I “guessed” correctly that somebody who takes over a month to open a return request probably would get lazy and not ship the item in a timely manner. Since we were dealign with a small dollar amount I made a gamble and won.
