How come no one ever talks about Poshmark?
Not a good place to sell? -
12/15/2018 at 11:17 am #53422
There’s a thread somewhere where we’ve talked about it a little.
I think it’s a much younger audience than Ebay – 90s stuff has sold well for me over there. I am resentful of the amount of work that goes into it with all the sharing. It’s only a few minutes a day but it irritates me to no end.
Stupid reason that it irritates me –
1. it’s lazy coding on their end, they didn’t build an algorithm and are relying on user work to create one via sharing,
2. I think the constant sharing drives traffic to their website and they are able to show artificially inflated numbers,
3. I don’t have to do it on Ebay and am being childish about having to do it on Posh. -
12/15/2018 at 12:31 pm #53425
just heard from a fellow scavenger that it sucks to buy on Poshmark too. sellers canceling orders consistently and only after 7 business days. not a good sign. anyone else try to buy on Posh?

Yeah, I am sort of annoying and send what I consider really low offers to sellers. I just do it to make up for the high shipping prices automatically set by poshmark. So far, I’ve purchased 4 or 5 items. Sellers have always accepted all offers I’ve sent. They’ve always made up for the reduced prices they’ve given me by sending the clothes via 1st class mail. I’ve received everything I’ve purchased. No problems.
-
12/17/2018 at 12:56 pm #53524
Almasty – poshmark sellers don’t get any kind of reimbursement if they ship something first class.
-
12/17/2018 at 1:33 pm #53526
Whaaaat? When I put the offer in, the checkout screen confirms that it will be for the offer price + $6.49 shipping rate. At least 1 of the packages I recently got was via 1st class, if not both from what I remember. Am I getting scammed? I just looked at my recent orders, and both had shipping for $6.49 apiece. I don’t see any refunds. Now I’m confused. 🙁
-
12/17/2018 at 1:42 pm #53528
I don’t know why it was sent 1st class because every label I have gotten from Posh has been a priority label. It doesn’t make sense to me because the seller doesn’t get any money for shipping, nor do they pay any money for shipping. It is all handled by Posh.
-
12/17/2018 at 1:46 pm #53530
I am really confused now. Oh well. At least they arrived as described.
-
12/17/2018 at 2:07 pm #53533
Yeah, that has me confused too. The shipping that is paid by the buyer on Poshmark stays with Poshmark (it doesn’t flow to the seller’s account). Then the seller gets a postage label from Poshmark to ship from. Poshmark handles all of the shipping…
And it would be goofy not to use it, as Poshmark uses the tracking from the label that they sent to get you paid. Once the item arrives with the buyer, they have three days to accept the item. After 3 days, the item is considered accepted and the seller is paid.
If they didn’t use the right label…there is no tracking, and acceptance can’t get processed…so no money…
-

Looking back on it, the packges could have been sent by priority mail. The packages I have received from sellers on there have all been cheap kraft manilla envelopes with lots of tape, folded up to make the size as small as possible. I really thought the labels said first class. Oh, well. I guess I could have just assumed that they were being sent via 1st class mail due to the size and weight. Now I feel bad for low balling all of those sellers. =/
There would probably be a lot more buyers on poshmark if they didn’t set the shipping rates so high.
-
12/18/2018 at 7:52 am #53586
Almasty: Yeah, I think they should do a First Class option, but I think they like the simplicity. $6.49 for Priority Shipping for everything up to 5 lbs.
Done.

Are you buying cheap on Poshmark to resell on eBay?
-
12/17/2018 at 2:48 pm #53541
No, I’m just buying a lot of cheap fast fashion for myself. Some of it can retail for $50-$100 apiece new, so I get them used for $5-15 apiece. Works for me. The quality isn’t terrible on the pieces I buy for myself, so they should last long enough to at least make the $5-15 worthwhile.
I’ve read that there are people who flip from Poshmark to Ebay, so I know it can be done. I just have enough of a backlog with books and ephemera to list that even if I wanted to sell clothes (and I do, I have several bags full of good vintage to eventually list on Ebay & Etsy), I can’t until later in the winter.
When I had time earlier this year to find Poshmark like clothes to list, I only bought pieces that I myself would want to wear in case I didn’t get around to listing them. I did find a few pieces, but I haven’t had the time to list them now that I’m bored with them, plus I have a few pieces of my own to list (brand new, unworn with tags, past return date but bought on sale so overall cheap cheap cheap). Hopefully another winter project.
The thrift stores in my area have also started selling individual items for $5-20 apiece (that includes shirt), so I might as well just look for styles I’m interested in online rather than wander aimlessly through thrift stores to maybe find a piece I might want in my size. They’ve really taken the fun out of thrifting for fun. =/

I’ve only bought 1 thing and it was an easy, smooth transaction. They automatically took the cost of the item out of my Posh balance and it was mailed quickly.

We dont sell on Poshmark, but there are a lot of Scavengers here who are. Many have said its easy to list and things sell.

I’m trolling all the Poshmark videos, absorbing info on different brands. Looking at starting up in Christmas break if I think it’s worth it. Ebay’s shirt sales are down 10% year to year. I think the 10% migrated to Poshmark

My shirt sales are dead. I don’t even bother shopping the shirts right now.

We have a thread under Random thoughts about Poshmark I started called POSHMARK THINGS under Random Thoughts. I make $500 / extra per month on Posh. I am getting away from sharing, maybe every 2 days. Which if that punishes me, oh well! 🙂

I think the statement that eBay is losing clothing to PoshMark is right. This is why we have started to crosspost there. We have had at least one sale there in 9 of the last 10 weeks, and I’m doing all the high-end items there first. So $1,158 in total sales so far…
-
12/17/2018 at 10:30 am #53509
No stats to back it up, but I agree…I think eBay is probably losing clothing (and, more importantly, clothing buyers) to Poshmark. I have clothing to list, not tons of it, but I might try cross-posting to Posh after the First of the year.

It will be interesting to see what happens when I start getting down to the lower priced stuff on PoshMark…

If you are a clothing or shoe seller or carry anything you can wear, please cross post/ try Poshmark or Mercari or Depop or Etsy. Just, get your clothing in front of another Google friendly search. At least your high end items and vintage items. On Mercari and Depop you can also add Hardgoods b/c they both have flat rate ship options.
I was very resistant to cross posting and I realize I was just trying to be romantic about ebay being my one and only. The other platforms are all mobile friendly and it takes very little time to cross post all from mobile or computer.

To those who have crossposted a substantial number of items, I have a few questions. Are you cross posting to more than one site? How much time per item does this take on average? How quickly do you handle removing sold items from other platforms? What about items that sell overnight? Have you been caught in the situation where a single item has sold on multiple platforms at/near the same time?
I have a few things on Poshmark and my biggest complaint is there photo setup. I take all my photos with a standalone camera and not my phone. I never post from my phone. Poshmark chops my photos to where the entire item cannot be seen. Once I realized this, I was done. Also, I refuse to do the whole sharing thing. I have so much other stuff to do than join party after party to promote my junk.
I think some of the other platforms have potential, but as of now, time = money and I can’t justify the extra time and headache involved with cross posting when eBay is still doing phenomenal for me (even clothing).

Bourbon: I’m not deep into this yet (only started a couple of months ago), but here is my experience:
Right now I’m crossposting to Poshmark and Mercari. I have both sites up at the same time when I do this. It takes about 1 minute to crosspost to each at the most. If I’m crossposting clothes, I will set up the Mercari site, then copy the title and description to Poshmark (I edit a little from what we have on eBay, adding the Item Condition and the SKU at the bottom of the Item Description). Then I submit them on both sites and update the SKU in SixBit (for the eBay and Etsy updating) to add -PM-MC on the listing. This lets me know that if something sells on eBay/Etsy if it is crossposted.
We enter the order in SixBit when something sells on those sites as soon as we can, but not from a crazy standpoint. Nothing has sold on multiple sites at the same time. If we are home and working when it sells, it will get removed within 30 minutes. Other than that, within a few hours.
For me, it is so easy to do that I think it is worth the time, especially since I’m starting with the highest value items first. If it increases the STR and Velocity on high dollar items, that is what I’m looking for. And if more shoppers are moving there (my own sons shop Mercari first), then I have to test where the buyers are…

Thanks for the info, Tsatt. I’ll be keeping an eye on Mercari and see how they evolve over the next few months to a year. I am in no hurry and would prefer to see more data before committing time and resources to other platforms and let them iron out some of their bugs and issues. Looking at their Alexa stats, it’s interesting to see Mercari’s rise over the past year and that the demographics are overwhelmingly from Japan.
eBay vs Mercari country origination:

Bourbon and JoeMezz: Poshmark requires square photos, so that is the issue. To that end, we have started taking ALL our photos in square mode.

Mercari is a Japanese company that expanded into the US.

Hard to find a quality video about Mercari but I think this one does an ok job comparing vs. other platforms.
Interestingly, Mercari sent me a survey yesterday and at the end wanted to know if you would be willing to be interviewed by local news or in promotions. Another big difference from established Ebay – they are polling and listening to successful sellers.

hey, i just (re)started to post on poshmark, since they actually have the ability to post via desktop (they didn’t when they first started, and it was a huge pain!) how are people who just use the ebay app getting their photos? i’m just downloading and then re-uploading to poshmark, which is a time suck. also they only allow 8 square photos and their titles are a lot shorter than ebays.
just curious how people are handling that. just thought i’d check it out, why not!

So, for me, I am using SixBit to help with that process. I have the photos in one folder that SixBit accesses for upload. Each listing has a unique number, and each photo for that listing is the listing # – 001, 002. So Listing 1234 in SixBit has photos 1234-001, 1234-002, etc. I pull up the listing in SixBit, get the SixBit number, then I can quickly find the photos for that listing on our hard drive. Uploading takes like 5 seconds.
The rest is copy and paste. Now I’m doing Poshmark and Mercari crossposting for that listing at the same time, so crossposting to 2 other platforms in 90 seconds.
PS-then on the SKU for the EBay listing, I add -PM and/or -MC for each crossposted platform. Then I know when something sells on eBay which platforms to make inactive. I don’t delete from that platform until about 30 days after the sale (in case of a return, I don’t have to redo the listing again).

Ryanne, do you have your photos in your own drive anywhere? If not, maybe crossposting would be a reason to start. Makes things easier, and if you use Chrome Remote Desktop, you could still access them from anywhere…

no, we just use the ebay app for photos. i do have Ink Frog who backs up all my listings, but i don’t know how to download photos from there, does anyone know? i would love to be able to do that.

Ryanne – that’s how I’m doing photos too.
For titles, I’m pasting the ebay title into the description and then pasting it again in the title line so that I can delete any weird half words that result.I believe they just started drafts, so maybe you can use that to your benefit. I think people have said that you can only have 15 drafts at a time.

12/22/2018 at 11:29 am #53865
ok, so you and i are doing the exact same thing. glad i’m not the only one! i think i’ll start cross posting some of my most expensive clothes and accessories and work my way down. people have started sharing and following me and i only have 4 things listed. hmmm, we’ll see.
-
12/22/2018 at 12:10 pm #53869
How are you downloading photos that were taken using eBay app? I know a 3rd party software is needed to do this in bulk but it sounds as if you and Ryanne are able to download photos from individual listings? Thanks for any tips
-
12/22/2018 at 12:20 pm #53870
the way i’m doing it is a real pain, i’m just right clicking on each photo and saying “save image as…” and saving to my desktop. it’s very slow!

Yikes–that sounds very tedious. I was hoping there was a shortcut. I haven’t decided whether to try out Poshmark–I still have death piles to be listed on eBay. It is tough to decide where to spend time.

12/22/2018 at 2:19 pm #53873
If you have items to list on eBay, list on eBay since eBay sales seem most consistent. Everyone I read here are just trying to make some extra money inconsistently on these other sites.
We’re just trying out Poshmark for “science”, plus we’re all caught up listing on eBay for the most part.

When I crosspost to Posh FROM Ebay from old listings, I do it on mobile, here is WHY, so fast:
1. Screenshot your ebay images ( go into our listing to do this – you can zoom in on your phone, edit in your phone whatever to get the square if needed).
2. COPY ALL the description text(I have all my details old school style in the description still and not relying solely on Item Specifics, I even list condition in there so it’s a giant chunk of text perfect for Posh, Depop, and Mercari).
3. Open Posh App- upload all the screenshot pics. If they are weird looking, adjust your screenshots in your phone photo editing app and then re-upload. You can’t edit within Posh’s app really.
4. Paste text, price 15% higher than ebay, and you’re DONE. Voila!Slight alteration moving forward on NEW listings to crosspost:
I take all my photos outside of the ebay app (using mobile) in SQUARE mode and they are saved on my phone (or you could upload to dropbox). It’s easier to upload to other platforms on mobile than ebay, so I list there first and come back to ebay on desktop. Make sure your description box is chock full of text from a-zYou can do this on a road trip, sitting at airport, watching TV, etc. Yes, screenshots are not “perfect photos” but it has never hurt me. Repeat on Depop and Merari as needed.
GOOD LUCK!

Ryanne, I would contact InkFrog and see if there is a way to download in bulk. Then you could have all your photos on your computer that you control (again, that is my thought for risk management). You could even ask EBAY if you can download in bulk.

Alright, I started a poshmark store today. So far, I’ve got 1 listing up. Within 10 minutes, I got a like on the item and there are new people “following” me every minute. I’m now over 100 followers, but I’m not following them back because why? The whole “following” thing is pretty amusing. I’m also not liking any items other than ones I want to purchase for myself. I don’t intend to share any of my items or anyone else’s ever during the course of this store, either.
This is pretty much going to be my experimental clothing store of putting 0 effort into it other than listing the darn items. Poshmark actually works out great for me because the listing process is easier than any other site, and I’m already too busy with books/ephemera on ebay to deal with another serious stream of income.
I’m going to try to add an average of 1 item every 2 or 3 days over the next few weeks to see how that goes, instead of “sharing” or any other normal poshmark “work” to keep listings active.
Adding Poshmark as a very limited income stream was a 2019 goal of mine. Already made 1 goal!

I will be very interested to see the outcome of your Poshmark experiment, almasty. I have no interest in the sharing/liking work either.
