Hi Kate, this happens often. I find cool art that I respond to but I cannot make out the signature and I’m not quite sure of the medium. Looks 60s. The poor photos were done hastily – sorry. Thought I would run it by you.

Hi, Christine!
Are both pieces by the same artist? Can you get a less blurry photograph of the signatures?
From here, they look like either watercolors or color lithographs, but it’s honestly hard to tell from the photos. -

Hi – yes, same artist. I added two more photos to the board.

Any info on an artist H. Fauvel? I couldn’t find anything in a google search so might just be a little known artist. This is coming up at an auction this weekend and I like it because, well, it has a goat.

Looks like it could be Hippolyte Fauvel. I’m down with a stomach virus but was able to find this link, which has a little bit of biographical information.
https://books.google.com/books?id=KU8BAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA535&lpg=PA535&dq=painting+hippolyte+fauvel%22&source=bl&ots=Uie_-QIuxL&sig=LfCiX11OkU0Hwk1KihnQNE3IK_I&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiCrI7WkavQAhUT22MKHdT8BZcQ6AEIGDAB#v=onepage&q=Hippolyte&f=falseAnd of four paintings that came to auction in 2005 and 2006, two didn’t sell, one sold for just under $200, and one sold for around $1000 I think. If you check findartinfo you can get the exact prices and make size comparisons.

Thanks! It looks like in one of his other paintings where I could make out a bit of the signature, he signed his full first name. I’m going to see what this painting does as I would be interested in it for myself, but it is good to know that I likely wouldn’t get over $200 for resale.

The painting at the auction I went to sold for $500, which was well above my $50 budget π

Yow! Well, *someone* thought it was authentic, anyway… π

Yes, because I am down for the count at the moment I didn’t cross-check all of the signatures…
but certainly more than one signed with just an H has been attributed to him. Of course, the art world and the internet are both rife with bad attributions. As I come back to life over the course of the day I’ll look into it some more. π-

Thank you again! I hope you start to feel better soon.

Feeling a little better today, thanks!
I found this one, signed “H,” and attributed to Hippolyte Fauvel.
http://www.prices4antiques.com/Fauvel-Hippolyte-Oil-on-Canvas-Painting-signed-Beach-Scene-with-Wagon-Figures-C227921.htmlI feel okay about the attribution, but not 100%. π

If anyone has good sites for an overview of California art pottery, I’d love it if you would share. I find a tremendous amount of vintage glazed stoneware in particular, often in earth tones. I’d like to learn at least the biggest names so I can decide quickly. I’ve also purchased a few nice pieces without looking them up. I’ve started a pinterest board with one example
Kate, I was thinking you might know of somewhere I can educate myself, or if this category of art pottery is not really in demand. Thanks!

Art pottery is in demand, in my experience. I’d definitely check The Marks Project. Here are a few articles and reference sites that might help:

http://themarksproject.org/I can’t see/read the signature on the piece with the blue leaves; can you get a better photo?

I know so little about art, I’m trying to figure out what type this is oil versus watercolor. There’s no signatures and I can ‘feel’ the paint so I’m thinking it’s not a print. Any help would be appreciated.
Can’t get the link or image thing to work but here it is hard wired π

I’m pretty sure those are paint-by-number paintings, which I believe are usually acrylic. Definitely not watercolor.
Here’s an existing listing for the pair:
