Hello, a customer just purchased two car doors from me – that were for local pickup only. However, he’s on the east coast, and I’m in Colorado. He thought he could have a Colorado friend pick them up. It doesn’t look like that is going to work. The car doors could technically be put on a pallet and shipped. But I did not account for all the time and effort it would take for me to make this happen… (that’s why I listed them as local pickup ONLY). Does anyone have recommendation of a service that the buyer could contact to come and get and ship the items to him? Or alternatively, is that something that I could research and send him the info to pay? (Or I could send him a PayPal invoice or the shipping + a packing fee, and he could pay me before I pay the shipper.) Since these are metal car doors, and 40 years old, I’m not too worried about any questions on the condition they are in when they arrive. But if there is any advice on that, too, I would be most appreciative. Thanks in advance! – Bonnie from Colorado

Since the purchase was for local pickup only, any shipping after the purchase would not be covered under seller protection. My recommendation is that you insist that the buyer arrange for shipping.
I have not personally run into this issue, but I have been told that Uship & Plycon are two companies that other eBay buyers have used in the past. I understand that these companies are similar to Uber in that the buyer would request quotes from independent drivers. Both companies have websites you can check out to get a feel for the process. The driver would pickup from your home.
You can suggest these companies to the buyer, but tell him that he is responsible to make the arrangements.

I agree with Sharyn. Also spot on with the company reccomendations. I have had both of these companies do pick ups for the customer at our offices. They are sub-contractors for the online company. Just give your customer there contact information and have them handle it from thier end.
The companies call you once your customer selects who he is going to use and you work out a pick up time with them. What we do to protect ourselves is we have a copy of the invoice-packing slip ready when they pick up. We have them sign this invoice, we include the date and also have them print their names as well as sign. I also request the person who picks up to show me their drivers license and I write the number, their name and address as well on the invoice and keep it for our records [just in case]. You could also just use your phone and take a photo of the pick up persons license, print it and keep it.
Sounds more complex that it really is. If they pre-paid only one copy is needed. If they pay at time of pick up just do two copies and use one to create a “paid in Full” receipt for them. Then make sure you go into Ebay and mark as paid and shipped.
But basically the buyer handles it all and you make a paper trail for yourself.
Good luck:

I imagine you’re hungry to complete the sale since big old car doors are likely hard to sell! We send buyers to Plycon or Uship to arrange shipping.
We just had a buyer purchase a huge wooden trunk that is also local pick up. Turns out she’s in Iowa so not sure how she plans to get it. I’m assuming she doesnt understand and will eventually cancel the sale. It’s a big let down after making a $600 sale.

Thank you, Sharyn, MDC Galleries, and Jay! Your info was GREAT and so helpful! I got a rough estimate on UShip, and then sent the info to the buyer, along with all the info for him to request a formal UShip quote. The buyer unfortunately was unfamiliar with UShip (and not in a position to check it out), so he preferred instead to call his friend back and ask him to pick up the doors. So my goals will still be met – of selling the doors and not packing them or risking losing $ on the shipping cost. I will definitely create the packing list as you suggested, write the friend’s info on it, have the friend sign it, and send a copy to the buyer. And now I’ll be prepared in the future — for any HUGE items — on how to coach someone through UShip/Plycon RIGHT AWAY. Thanks again, folks! You are the BEST!
