So there was a tent sale at Field & Stream. We had a few minutes before our movie started so I checked it out. There were lots of great deals, but far too much of a capital investment for me to buy and shoes/clothes. Then I came to the socks and saw a few pair of smartwool socks. I started to grab a few and then realized I was out of time. We left for the movie with the plan to come back afterwards.
Once I got back I started grabbing a couple pairs. Then I noticed there were ALOT more smartwool socks than I originally thought. I debated with myself internally, checked my paypal balance, and said “screw it, you are a professional – man up!”.
I literally filled a shopping cart and proudly hauled my load to the shocked cashier.
All told I bought 198 pair of smartwool and paid less than $3 a pack.-

WoW! I would have gone all in on that too. What a great find! SmartWool is my favorite sock.

I also have been waiting patiently for 99 cent tag day at my local Goodwill. They got a huge load of new in box steel toe safety shoes over a month ago. Again I got some odd looks from people when I overflowed my cart with these shoes. 13 pair for $13. All in baby!

Amazing deals! Carolina, Sketchers, SmartWool – these are all great brands!

The green boxes are Florsheim Steel Toe dress oxfords. They were the stars of the deal IMO.

Shipping is predictable
You can always lot

Boring boring boring
What if you over estimate demand?
What is there was a bad reason the item was donated?Damaged/Recalled etc….
What say y’all?-

–Boring boring boring
(This is our biggest reason for not going all in)–What if you over estimate demand?
(if its cheap enough, we’ll always buy since it’ll all sell)–What is there was a bad reason the item was donated?Damaged/Recalled etc….
(obviously we wouldnt buy if things are damaged, but this is true for any item) -

It definitely requires thought to decide to go all in.
The big factors for me are price per item, storage space, shipping complexity, and demand.I’ve went all in a few times over the last couple years. I’ve always made money – sometimes a lot. I still have a few all-in buys taking up room in my storage that I probably should purge.
In this specific case the price was great, the space/item is about as good as it gets, shipping is as easy as it gets, and demand is strong. Even right now in the heat of summer Smartwool socks sell pretty well. I assume they will sell like hotcakes in the late fall so I will probably hold strong on my prices. It was a no-brainer to go all in. The only catch was the volume. While getting this kind of inventory at less than $3 a pair is awesome, at 198 pair I spent $615 with tax. Ouch! That’s ALOT of capital to invest for me all at once.
My profit off of this once they are all sold is right around $2300 to be conservative. If I want to I can compete on price for them and still make $1500 easy.

fireguy: I agree.
I also look at how many items I have to sell before I recoup my investment, and how fast they are selling on eBay (checking the current listings compared to the sold listings).
