Well, I suppose the 3.5% couldn’t last forever!
Fees going up to 5% on July 16th and they are going to include shipping costs too.
Grrr…. We send some big heavy stuff from the UK (mainly to USA).
I felt cross for about 10 minutes, but actually if it means Etsy invest more in pushing buyers to the site, then I guess I’m happy to contribute to that 🙂 -

I’ll be interested to hear if this changes the selling equations for those who use Etsy as a major platform. Still cheaper than eBay/Amazon for now.

Yep. Cheaper fees, less eyeballs.
If they can get more traffic, then it would be great!

But with fees going up, then I’d think Etsy sellers would need to see a rise in sales.
It’s now 5% on sales, plus 5% on shipping costs.Im surprised they could keep fees that low for so long. Now that they’re a publicly traded company, I imagine fees will keep rising like all platforms.

Well, well, well… Here is a copy of the exact Email we just got. Note what they also saved for the “last paragraph”. They have implemented a 2 tier store level subscription. You can continue to use your store as is or upgrade to a subscription – membership.
Now I wonder what they are NOT GOING to do for the basic level sellers that they WILL DO for the Subscribers? Do you think maybe more juice, more exposure, more specialized placements, more tools, more analysis, etc., etc.?
You bet cha’. You pay more you get more. Just like all the other platforms.
Here is the email: …
Dear Seller Community,We’re writing to tell you about some changes at Etsy. We’ve been helping sellers on their creative journeys for 13 years now. We’ve focused on making Etsy the best place to run your creative business, and we’ve listened to sellers like you to learn more about what you need from us.
Now, we’re planning to invest even more in bringing buyers to Etsy, building seller tools, and improving your seller experience. To help make this happen, we’re updating our fees, and we’re adding some new features.
Effective July 16, Etsy’s transaction fee will increase from 3.5% to 5% and it will also apply to the cost of shipping. All other fees, including listing fees, will remain the same.
We’re also introducing new optional feature packages designed around the needs of sellers at different stages of growth, so you can access the right tools at the right time for your business.
If you’re happy with the services you currently use on Etsy, you can still access all the tools that are currently available to you without paying a monthly subscription fee. But if you want to do more, we’ll be offering two new plans: Etsy Plus, with tools to help businesses grow and express their unique brands, will be available in July. Etsy Premium, with more advanced tools for larger-scale businesses, will launch in 2019.
Explore our video and website to learn more about what’s changing and look for more information in the weeks to come. We’re excited to see what’s next for all of us as we continue to invest more in growing your business, together.

Mike in the FAQ they say
“Will sellers who pay for a monthly package get special treatment in Etsy search? No, paid subscriptions will not influence how your listings appear in search.”
Whether that is 100% true….who knows

Yeah.. agree and also the payers will get their “special tools” which will help to grow their business. Well then I guess those who do not pay, will not get those tools. And if you DO HAVE those tools then I suppose Etsy imagines that you will out perform your competition. If you out perform, then you will, I guess make more Sales and Make more Money.
Sure, maybe they won’t mess with the search results, but what will those “special tools” do for you if you have access to them as opposed to those who don’t? Hmm…
Haven’t watched the video yet, but will after we return from some errands.

I’m happy to see they will be adding phone support and live chat. Users have been asking for better customer support and it’s nice that Etsy has responded.
Also they will be adding different ‘packages’ sort of like ebay’s store levels. There will still be a ‘free’ level but they will be adding two more levels that give you more options.
I’m hoping higher fees / more advertising leads to better sales as my sales have gone done on Etsy this year.

I’m hoping this will be a net positive for our (very small!) business. We aim for a high margin on all our items to cover our time. The increased fee is still only a small percentage. We will look at our shipping charges and probably increase those to cover the new 5% on shipping.
The packages they are offering seem aimed towards their ‘handmade’ sellers, who are brand building. I don’t think this is relevant to sellers of unique vintage stuff.
Most vintage sellers on Etsy seem very small. I don’t come accross very many with more than 1,000 items. I don’t think these tiny businesses will want to pay an additional monthly fee on top of listing fees and final selling fees.

Yes. I agree it does seemed aimed more at the handmade crowd. I looked at the information they have on the packages and nothing jumped out at me like I had to have it. The rate for the first package is going to be $10 a month for the rest of 2018 and then go up to $20 per month in 2019. So if you do want the extra goodies it is not a huge monthly fee.

Possible good news here. If Etsy creates a positive experience for their sellers, maybe eBay may learn a thing or two.
