Every since we’ve been married, my wife and I have been very frugal. We like to get the most bang for our buck. My kids just finished spring baseball and my daughter is to the point she needs a new bat to better fit her size. I figure if I’m going to pay $30-50 for a bat, I might as well get an awesome bat.
If you don’t know anything about baseball or softball, know that most composite bats cost $200 and up.So I started looking locally for softball bats on facebook. No good, so I started looking on ebay for composite bats in the length I want for less than $50. I had a couple picked out I was watching. In the meantime, I did my weekly Sunday Goodwill run. What do I find in the sporting goods section? A composite softball bat in the size I want for $7. Score!
A new $5 grip tape and a little cleaning and it is good to go.I actually sold a nice composite softball bat on ebay back in April, but it was too big and too nice for my daughter at the time. She really upped her game this spring and was bit hard by the ‘ol ball bug.
Anyways, it’s always nice when I can find exactly what I was already looking for personal use when I’m doing routine ebay scavenging.

Once, a friend was tagging along on some scavenging. She was telling me that she was on the lookout for a sweater shaver and for me to keep my eyes peeled for one. Minutes later I was picking one up off the shelf and handing it to her.

A few months ago I really wanted a can crusher. They are a device that you put in your aluminum can and it squeezes it down to almost nothing.
Everywhere I looked, they were $50 or more with shipping. I then found a brand new one at a religious thrift store for $3. About 30 minutes later I found another at Value Village for $4. Bought them both. Now I have a spare that will probably never be used, but I had to get them both!
There are certain things I always pick up for myself – various remote controls for TVs, radios, electronics I have (they are always cheap, usually work, and expensive to replace – and if the device dies, they are easy to sell); kitsch with my favorite sports team logos on them; Logitech Trackballs; OTA TV antenna parts/equipment; emergency radios/power generators…
The great thing is that the items I “stockpile” for myself are easy to sell – except the kitsch sports logo stuff.

Yep, we do the same thing. The flip side is, we joke that if we actually pay full price somewhere for something, we’ll see it within a week at a yard sale or thrift for a lot less…even if we haven’t seen one for months at those places LOL

I feel for you buddy. When our daughter was in high school she was on a field hockey team, soccer and a fast pitch softball team which she also joined a summer travel team. All of that sports equipment really added up. Body protection and use gear.
We finally sold the last of it a few years back. It took a long time to sell but eventually it was all gone. I still found a sack of about a dozen softballs a few weeks ago and a metal bat. But think I will just donate those to be rid of them.
She is 40 years old now, but still complains when she saw something of hers she left at our house listed in our stores. She was still thinking she could move on with her life for 20 years and leave all that stuff back at our house for FREE Long term storage. She soon got the message. HaHa LOL 🙂
