Hello, I sold a Dewalt light which stated in the listing that only 1 out of the 3 bulbs work. I had many best offers for this item, and I finally accepted one of them. When the customer received the item, he said it did not work at all. I told him he could send it back for a full refund. He then said he wanted a partial refund. I again stated he could send it back for a full refund. Now he is asking whether he will pay for the return or whether I will send him a return slip. I sell mostly books so I have few returns. Do I send him a return slip, or can I reimburse him the return shipping once I receive the item? Or do you have any other advise for me? The item did work before it was shipped out.

What is your stated return policy?

lindawoo,
Just wondering why you chose not give a partial refund if that is what the buyer requested?
Jay,
Would the return policy matter if the buyer is stating that the return is due to the item not working? Wouldn’t the buyer be covered under the ebay 30 day money back guarantee return policy causing the seller to have to pay for the return because the buyer is stating the item does not work?

Lindawoo – I would send him return label through eBay. It’s usually the cheapest option. If he doesn’t return it and the label is unused, the cost will be reimbursed back to you.

Lindawoo is fairly new around here (only see a couple posts made). Just trying to figure out if she knows her return policy. If so, then it’s the same answer every time.
Here are the choices:
–if the “item is not as described”, then you will pay for return shipping. You can fight this after the item is returned and does work. (Though we have had mixed results lately fighting INADs)
–You give a partial refund if you don’t want the item back. -

I am a very part time seller, but I have sold mostly books for many years on different platforms. I do not have a store yet, but I am working harder on listing so that I can get a basic one. So, I sheepishly say that I do not have a return policy yet. I guess I need to work on that. I decided to take the item back based upon what I though was the wisdom from the forums here and from the podcast, but maybe I did the wrong thing? My husband is thinking that he may try to fix it with new bulbs and then we can put the item back on Ebay.
Thanks for answering my question. I now understand how to go forward!

If we think we can resell an item, we always want the item back. 25% of the time, the buyer never sends it back so the problem solves itself.
If you can just change the bulbs, then that’s better than selling it partially working.
Even if you don’t have an eBay store, eBay makes you choose some kind of return policy. Even “no returns” is a choice.

Jay,
That makes sense.

Oh, then my return policy is 30 days, buyer pays for return shipping. I thought it was something more than that.
I think we can definitely sell the item again since we had a lot of interest. Replacement bulbs do not appear to be sold anywhere online, so we may have to find another work light in order to replace the bulbs.
