Greetings, Scavengers! My name is David and I live in metro Denver. My wife and I, along with our dog and two cats, moved here a little while back from Florida’s Space Coast.
I stumbled on the podcast a few years ago while I worked in marketing for an aerospace company. Jay and Ryanne’s soothing NPR-esque delivery entered me into the necessary mental state required to produce marketing materials for avionics.
I’ve sold on eBay very sporadically since 2000, but decided to give it a go full-time when we moved west. Even with competition from other resellers, Denver has been dramatically better for sourcing than Florida. Of course, cost of living is a lot higher here too, so there’s a trade-off.
My primary interest for resale is art – paintings, prints, pottery, gig posters, etc., but I’ve sold a little bit of everything.
Anyway, hope to both contribute and learn a lot here.

Greetings from Orlando, FL. My wife and I were married on the Space Coast last year, in Satellite Beach (at Pelican Beach).

Nice, Edward! I’m very familiar with Pelican Beach. We lived in Palm Bay. My wife and I considered the cool little A-frame clubhouse at Pelican for our wedding, but alas her family was too numerous.

The clubhouse worked out very well for the reception after the ceremony on the beach. We went back Sunday to celebrate our first anniversary.

Welcome! So you and your wife are both full-time scavengers now in Denver? Was the transition difficult from having a steady job?

Welcome David! We are just up the road from you in Broomfield.

@Jay My wife actually works in education, so it’s mostly just me scavenging, listing and shipping. She loves thrifting too though and is slowly developing an eye for things she previously would have dismissed (and giving me weird looks when I pick up weird stuff less frequently too).
The transition has been pretty difficult. We lived in a tiny apartment for a while while we were house shopping, so that was limiting. Once we found a reasonably-priced house in the area, we had to get used to paying a mortgage that was twice that in Florida, smaller and about 60 years older.
Personally, it’s been difficult for me to move from a job where tasks are assigned to figuring it all out myself. I always had a certain amount of freedom in previous sales and marketing jobs, but there was still a framework and processes to keep everything moving. Needless to say, my respect for my previous employers has grown.
@T-Satt Hello from Thornton! I’m not too far from that ARC on Washington.-

I know that store. Pickings for us have never been good there, so we don’t go there anymore. Try the Mile High Thrift north of there. Wednesday is best if you are over 55 so you can get a 50% discount.

Sorry about the ARC. Maybe I get all the good stuff =). Since I live a mile down the road, I can easily pop in and have had pretty good luck. On the other side, I haven’t had a lot of luck in Broomfield, likely because I’m not able to hit those as often.
I’ve had some great luck at the Mile High near me. Just picked up a watercolor there last week that I should be able to make a grand on! Good day! I have about another 20 years before the senior discount kicks in, but I’ve considered offering a ride to my thrift-loving senior neighbor as a ringer to get in on that action. Boy the line there gets a little crazy sometimes though.

Absolutely!
When my Parents lived here, I would take my dad to get the discount. Anything to save the money!

Shoot me a message sometime at tsatterf@yahoo.com. Maybe we can meet for coffee or breakfast sometime.
“Or maybe we could just get together and eat some caramels. When you think about it it’s just is arbitrary is drinking coffee.“

Haha…deep cut on the “Good Will Hunting” reference. And appropriate. I’ll be sure to get in touch.

Hi David: I’m in St. Pete, Florida and my dream is to someday move to Colorado. I spend time on Zillow etc. looking at houses in Colorado and they seem so expensive! Where is affordable to live in Colorado that would be near Denver & the mountains. I was sort of thinking if I could find somewhere between Breckenridge & Denver, I’d be in heaven – but the prices are so crazy high. Point me in the right direction – where should I be looking? Also, do you think Utah is more affordable than Colorado? Thanks! Katie.

Katie: I’m in this area, and affordable is tough right now, if you want a reasonable commute into Denver. I-70 into Denver isn’t fun. Breckenridge to Denver is 2+ hrs, without traffic. 3+ with traffic.
Utah is more affordable. It is in my mind for a “final” spot.

Welcome David. I am in Arvada, (about 3 ARCs away from you on the map). I work 40 hours/week at the moment, but I am scaling up once I retire in June. Actually, I have been scaling up for the last month or so and have increased my store by 50% in items listed in that time. If the invite for coffee or caarmels is open, I would love to join or alternatively could host a get together in my neck: dugans123@gmail.com.
@Katie – I think other metro areas may be closer to what you are looking for (affordable home in/near mountains and in/near large city). On the Front Range, Colorado Springs is more affordable than Denver and Pueblo is the most affordable (and least like a city). Ft Collins used to be affordable. If could live in a college town, consider Casper, Wy. On the other side of the mountains, Grand Junction would be the place I would look at and around for more affordable living close to mountains and city. Fruita and Palisade are both beautiful little towns, though they may already be ‘discovered’ gems – I am not sure of the prices there.
Best wishes, Daniel.-

aperture, we are close neighbors, as we are in Broomfield. I will second your thoughts on the Western Slope. I’m not sure on affordability, but my parents lived in Delta for a while, and that area is wonderful.
