Steve – I remember my mother having one of those step baskets when I was a kid. She would fill it with stuff from her office in the basement, and eventually carry it up the stairs. It was a convenient way to remember to bring things up or down.
Here are a few interesting sales from last week:
Here is my first sale from my first trip to the Goodwill bins. I paid 25 cents for a 1988 fundraiser cookbook published by the Women’s Auxiliary group of the University of Pittsburgh Nationality Rooms. I’ve taken my kids there a couple times at the holidays. Sold for $18.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/183116920364Someone with a fancy vintage/thrift shop in NY bought eight items from me! Here is the priciest, a ceramic deer with antlers. She low balled me, but I’ve had this item for way too long. I had prepackaged it in a very large box that has been sitting in my basement. I had only paid $9 for it, so I counter-offered $89. I got my profit; now she can have hers.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/182476710239Here’s another item that had been sitting around for over a year. It’s a NY vendor display of pre-911 lighters. I had initially priced it really high, like around $400 or best offer, because I thought it was very unique. When it came up as a stale listing on eBay, I lowered the price to $250 and then put it on sale. When a $125 offer came in, I just wanted it off my shelves. I paid around $29.

Some highlights from what sold for me last week:
I did well with some retro dishes in the past, so scooped up a bunch of Star Glow by Royal China in the last year – and it is trickling out slowly… Originally had it listed as a large set, and I had some watchers, but I decided to part it out, and have sold a few sets of different pieces. Sold what dinner plates I had this past week: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Set-of-7-Royal-China-Mid-Century-Star-Glow-10-Dinner-Plates-Atomic-Ironstone/323019710251
One of the most interesting auctions I went to in the last year was for a woman who was into tarot, had a bookcase full of books on every religion, and collected teapots. I would have liked to have met her. I ended up cleaning out her tarot card collection, knowing there could be some real winners as well as some bread and butter sales in there. So far, a bit of both – despite none of the decks being in their original boxes, or having their original instructions. This is one of the higher sales: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Tricia-Newell-Mythic-Tarot-Complete-78-Card-Deck-OOP-1986/322972609136
Steve, on a whim this past week, I took several items of mine that had been up for some time, that had lots of watchers, and put them on auction. Apparently, none of the watchers were paying attention…of the 10 auctions I set up, only one sold, and for lower than expected, a NOS child’s Mickey Mouse t-shirt. Had it listed for $50 for a long time, got lots of watchers, added in Best Offer, and am glad it’s now gone despite having hopes for a higher sale price: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-70s-80s-Kids-Mickey-Mouse-T-Shirt-Tropix-Togs-NEW-IN-SEALED-BAG/323148932449
Horsey stuff can do well. Picked these random vintage jodphurs up at an estate sale for $1 or 2. They sold last week for $35, but are on their way back to me, as they didn’t fit the buyer. I noted the measurements in the listing, and have a re-stock fee…the buyer didn’t note that my measurements were off, so I assume they just didn’t pay enough attention: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Jodhpurs-Breeches-Riding-Pants-Gray-Tweed-Suede-W26-x-27/322972838252
This vintage NOS swim cap was my favorite item of the week. I picked it up for $1 at an estate sale, and listed it at $40 having sold a few of these before. I figured it would sell at some point, likely to a prop studio or something singular, but a gal in AK bought it and wrote in her feedback that these hard to find caps cover the ears better than any others out there! 🙂 https://www.ebay.com/itm/MINT-Vintage-Howland-Rubber-Swim-Cap-White-with-Floral-Texture-Chin-Strap-Med/323151372753
Happy Scavenging!

Yeah, I think it would have to be a fresh listing of like a day or two that accumulates 10 or more watchers quickly, then you know there is some spirited interest and switching to an auction then, might get that bidding war going.

I have had great success selling tarot cards. I wish I could find them on a regular basis! That’s a great auction purchase!

Nice bunch of sales, Steve! I need to keep my eye out for vintage car parts apparently. I just bought some old Oldsmobile parts at an auction on a whim and was shocked how much they were worth. I had a bunch of good sales last week. Here are some highlights…
I’ll start with my big sale of the week. I love finding old Sony walkmans and Discmans at yard sales because they are always priced for a few bucks and can sometimes be worth quite a bit. Well I found my white whale a few months back. It’s a Sony D-88, one of the most unique and sought-after portable CD players made. It was designed to be smaller than the size of a CD. The disc would stick out of the sides kind of like those small portable record players. Not a very good design, but I guess so few of them remain out in the world that they’re quite valuable. Mine needed some work done. It wouldn’t output any sound. So I listed it for repair/parts and it sold within a week for $155. I only paid $4 for it originally.
Sony Discman D-88I acquired this Tupperware salt and pepper donkey caddy from a box lot at an auction last summer. I paid a hefty price for the lot, so each sellable piece came to about $2. Of course everybody bidding against me came up afterwards wanting to buy this piece from me, so I knew it had to be good. I listed and sold it for $30.
Tupperware Donkey CaddyThis vintage car alarm system came from a box lot of old electronics that I bought for $4. I really didn’t think it would sell. Outdated vehicle security just didn’t seem like something someone would want to install in their own car. I guess I was just banking on the fact that it was unopened and maybe a car alarm enthusiast would come along one day and buy it. It took a long time, but I finally took a best offer of $40.
Vintage Car AlarmI love selling original art because art is so subjective. I don’t even have to like it for it to sell. Case in point, I thought this piece was VERY ugly. Not so much the style (I can appreciate the abstract), but the colors were just unappealing. Maybe that was what the artist was going for? I don’t know, but it sold for $70. I paid a buck and some change for it.
