Help! SHIPPING BACK PACK Help with Box size

  I just sold a large vintage WWII Backpack with a metal frame. I’m shipping to GSP.
  
  When I first put in the shipping information it comes up as $18 with just the weight of the box priority . when I put in the box size which is 19 x 17 x 14 it jumps up to $35 …Its only 7 pounds 2 ounces with bubble wrap.
  When I ad up the figures it comes to 50 inches not 84 inches.
  How to get this price down? What happens if I don’t put in the box measurements.. Do they just charge you later? Usually I don’t put in the box measurements and I’ve always been fine but this is a larger box.
  Thank you in advance for any suggestions. Also I put it in fedex post and it was over $30.
  I charged $20 for shipping.

  That is way oversize…
  
  If you don’t put in the measurements and they charge you later.. you will be charged the retail rate with no discounts… That would be ugly.
  
  If it were me and I couldn’t get the dimensions down, I’d just bite the bullet and pay the shipping. You aren’t the first one who has made this mistake and you won’t be the last.
  
  I wish I had better news.. if possible, get the size down, but it sounds like it’s going to be an oversize package regardless.

  L X W X H must be 1728 or less.
  
  You have 19 X 17 X 14 = 4522…
  
  Oversize package.

  Yea I really got that wrong.
  I found a smaller box that is long and narrower and see if that may make the cut… I have to add some extra cardboard on top but it’s secure and already wrapped in bubble.
  11 x 15 x 22
  If I send it parcel it comes down to $17.35 Before parcel select did not come up on the list.
  
  When I look at the shipping on the site, I chose standard shipping which may have been parcel select?
  and the date says it should arrive on or before feb 15 so parcel select is
  2-9 days.
  I’m going to ship it that way and take the hit if its a day or 2 late.
  
  Hopefully it will work….Phew ….

  This message came up when I clicked continue on the shipping info for eBay..
  Is that because it’s parcel select? I’ve never seen this message before…

  When they began checking weight etc they added that message. It’s fairly recent.
  
  Did you check Priority Mail with your discount. Sometimes it’s less than Parcel and insurance is included.

  Do calculated shipping. That way the buyer pays for the shipping and you won’t have unpleasant surprises.

  I think my mistake was:
  Originally I measured a box that mainly fit the item I would just have to add a bit of cardboard. Then I needed that box for another item I was shipping.
  I didn’t realize the size constraints as I misunderstood the whole girth thing. lol
  
  Anyway I think it’s fine as I sent it out parcel …
  Also received such an interesting email from the buyer in Italy.
