Phone rings, very odd number, goes to message, message left (! not the usual telemarketer junk), contacted directly by a buyer!
Nice fellow, said his address was wrong in the system, he contacted eBay ( overseas c/s ) and they told him to call me.
Had a great talk, complaints about not being able to understand the eBay rep etc., but they told him there was nothing they could do. Item had gone out 2 days before USPS so not much I could do either, but tracking indicates that the package will be on the way back to me.
He had moved and said the address was corrected then somehow changed back, regardless it will get sorted.Honestly can’t recall an eBay customer calling directly – happy it wasn’t a freak out. And surprisingly rewarding to be able to work with / “meet” a customer.
The other odd thing that happened, and this has come up several times in the past couple of months, is a buyer who made an offer on an item, and then within a minute CANCELLED that offer, then a minute later bought the item for full price. Works for me but, c’mon, relax!!!
It can get interesting!

We’ve had only five or six buyers ever call us. They fall into several categories:
–Older people wanting to talk about how much they love the item.
–Someone wanting to come to our “store” and shop in person.
–Or your example of someone worried about not getting the item.eBay bought Skype last decade thinking buyers or sellers would talk to each other in person.
It was a big failure. -

I had a buyer call me once with a similar situation – they recently moved, but forgot to change their address in eBay and I sent an item (old Super 8 film projector) to there old address.
I was able to work out with the post office to get the item flagged and returned to me.
By weird coincidence, the buyer moved to the same neighborhood my parents live in about 2 hours away – I was just happening to visit my parents that upcoming week and arranged for him to drop by and pick up the item when I was there. The projector was my parent’s in the first place as well – it travelled a lot for no reason!

Did not know that about Skype that Jay mentioned. Thank goodness that didn’t happen. I wouldn’t want people to see me in my sweats or bathrobe with my hair looking like I just got out of bed, because that is what they would get most days!

Ha. I assume it was going to be all audio. But I can’t imagine what conversations would have been like.

“The idea of buying Skype, explained Aapo Markkanen, telecoms analyst at IHS Global Insight, was to increase the number of people buying and selling on the website by improving communication between bidders and auctioneers. Rather than emailing each other they would be able to talk, using the website itself for their free calls. This direct connection, meanwhile, would help eBay reduce the amount of fraud in its auctions, helping to reduce costs and attract more buyers. But he said: “In practice, the users simply still preferred emails to calls. Communication in voice also compromised some of the anonymity of bidding, which to many users is a significant upside in online auctions.”

it would be cool if ebay had a live chat that you could opt into. or would that be just as annoying as someone calling you? not sure.

Oh man, super annoying! When I’m logged on ebay I’m working. The last thing I want is to get interrupted by people wanting to chat about an item. Messages all the way.

I dislike the notion of ebay giving out my phone number. Feels like an invasion of privacy. If I wanted to talk to customers I’d have a brick and mortar store.

Ebay has always had seller’s and buyer’s phone numbers available for those who know how to find them. I’ve only had good things happen when I’ve talked to customers on the phone.

In 20 years I’ve only had a couple customers call me.
eBay doesn’t verify your phone number, so technically you can put any number in you want if you are concerned.

I just got a call (went to voicemail) from a new buyer. She wants to buy some type of extended coverage on the item she bought. She was looking for a call back. I messaged her and referred her to Ebay. I was very polite and friendly..
