I just sold 10 Nesting Bowls of Redware Pottery and for full price. YAY! (i had make offer which she did but I also told her my calculations were a bit off and would probably cost more to ship than I anticipated. She was super cool and decided to pay full price which may help pay the extra shipping.)
Love a reasonable buyer. and she wants it priority not fedex post ..
I will obviously double box bubble and peanuts but have never packed anything like this.
Any tips or suggestions? I thought maybe of splitting the boxes into 2 shipments.
The total weight of the bowls are 12.4 ounces and the largest bowl is 16×11.
Any advice would be appreciated.. -

I would avoid doing two boxes as long as you think a single box wont be too heavy. Did you mean each bowl is about 12 oz? So 120 oz total?
Bubble wrap, peanuts and double boxing is the key. Its a lot of work!

Sorry about that…. no 12 pounds 4 ounces total weight for all bowls together …
I have already boxed the first box. I have a good friend who is great at packing.
so far we layered each bowl with a mid weight foam packing and nested each bowl inside. Then wrapped more foam on the bottom side and top of the bowls. Then used large bubble wrap around the whole thing.. The bowls are snug and secure.
I had a box that seems to fit them perfectly and now looking for a larger box to float them in.
The measurements of the first box are 16 . 7.5 . 20 …I’m thinking a 24 24 12 or something like that…
so just stuff lots of peanuts around the whole thing will be enough? -

Not seeing what you have, I’ll give a go at it. I would break them out into two groups by sorting them every other size. So, the first group would have the largest one, the third largest, fifth largest, etc. The second group would have the second largest, the fourth largest, etc., until you have two groups of five.
Take the largest bowl in a group and wrap it in bubblewrap. Take the second largest, wrap it in bubblewrap and fit it in the larger one. Keep doing this until you have a group of five, each wrapped in bubblewrap and fitting together. Then do it to the other group of five.
Take each group of five and either find a box just the right size or “wrap” the group in cardboard by cutting it to size, bending it around, and cutting up the ends to make your own box. There shouldn’t be anywhere for the bowls to move around. Use extra packing material to fill in spaces. Then, bubblewrap the outside of each cardboarded/boxed group of 5.
Find a box big enough to fit both packed up (cocooned) sets and use packing material around them. What you want is where the outside of the box can be pushed in and your cocooned bowls will have some room to move out of the way. What you don’t want is the bowls to have movement inside the cocoon where they might hit against each other and break.
I hope this makes sense. It is how I pack multiples of breakable items. I have had breakage when I didn’t follow the procedure.

I should add that you need to tape up each cocoon before you wrap the outsides in bubblewrap.
Going forward, when you estimate weight for shipping such an item, you need to consider the outer box, the cardboard for your inner boxes, and all the bubblewrap and packing material. It could come to about 3 pounds more than the weight of the item itself.

I would offer that I have learned that the shipping label for a listing can only be used once on either a box or an envelope. It can not be printed and used again on a second box or envelope.

AdventureE – Yes, one shipping label cannot be used for two different boxes. However, Ebay does allow you to purchase a second label for the same listing.
One time I had a set of books that would have been overweight for media mail if I used one box only. I was able to purchase two different labels for the one sale and divide the books between two boxes.

Thanks Sharyn
I’ve been fairly accurate with most of my listings but this one I just couldn’t figure. Actually based on my estimations the box will weight between 18-22 pounds and should cost around $22-24 priority to ship. The buyer already paid $18 so it’s not too bad. Also I’ve been very good with getting free shipping packing materials minus tape. I pick up boxes and packaging at work and other sites.

As long as you have each bowl packed with enough packing material between each bowl so that they don’t shift during shipping you will be fine. The secret is to have them each secure so they don’t move at all. Double boxing is a must. Sounds like you did just fine. It helps if you cross your fingers until they get delivered 🙂

can’t believe no one asked this yet- how much did you get for the bowls??? i hope it was high, as i know what a pain it is to pack.

$100 for the set + she has paid $18 towards shipping.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/173039066961I would of asked for more but in my research for red ware bowls they seemed to be very low under $50. The woman who bought them collects Mexican Pottery. So I’m glad Plus I got them at auction for an unbelievable $10 no one seemed interested but me. 🙂
Well I’ve been out searching for a box very hard to find one with the dimensions I need. Waiting to hear from my friend’s who works at lowes and the other one who works at trader Joes for help. (Trader Joes has a lot of great boxes and they tend to unpack at night close to closing FYI ….
Btw my local uhaul has a large recycling box of free boxes that people can leave so I’ll be checking that regularly.
I may try to piece 2 boxes together I’m much better at cutting down to size then putting 2 together so we will see what I come up with. U haul has a 24 24 27 for $9..95 trying to avoid that one.
