My husband was in an accident recently (he’s fine but the car isn’t…) It’s an older, low value car so we don’t have collision coverage. Cost of repairs is likely going to be more than value. We have very little mechanical/car knowledge but is there anything easy we could pull off the car for resale before we junk it? Thanks for reading!

To get proper answers, here are questions:
–Can you share the year/make/model of the car?
–Adding a photo will be good so people can see where the damage was.
–Do you or your husband have some skill in taking stuff apart? We’ve never junked a car, but I know there are scavengers here who have that expertise.

Thanks Jay. It’s a 2005 Kia Spectra. Don’t have a photo unfortunately but the front end (mainly hood) was damaged. We are mainly looking for things we can easily pull out of the interior (minimal disassembly). I’m also thinking of pulling off the wheel covers. I snagged a set of elantra factory ones for free recently (haven’t listed yet but looks like they sell fairly well)

Key locks and keys, approx $30 per set.
Ignition lock and key, approx $50
Tail light assembly, approx $50
Steering wheel with air bag, approx $60
Side mirrors, approx $20
Driver’s side power window control, approx $40
Door handles, approx $10 each
Sun visors, approx $25 for set of 2
Console lid/arm rest, approx $18
Instrument cluster gauge, approx $50
A/c or heater control panel, approx $25
Interior lamp covers, approx $10 eachThese aren’t too difficult to remove, if you have a little handyman ability and some patience. They’re also small enough to ship fairly easily. Well, except for the light assembly and side mirrors. They’ll take a bit of packaging.

You may want to try youtube.com for info on taking out the car parts. These days you can learn just about anything on YouTube.com.

Thanks for all the input everyone! Seemed kind of daunting to think about at first but I think there’s at least a few things we can easily do! I’ve been out the loop here for awhile but I was reading one of the forums where people were talking about selling parts from your old appliances (I have done this as well!) Got me thinking – why not the car?!?!?
Ryanne and Jay – that is awful about your car! Never would think of someone taking the seats!!!

Basically anything that can break, there are probably tens of thousands of that car sold.
Original floor mats if in good shape.
Cargo cover.
Front license plate mounts.
Jack and spare tire.
Windshield wiper control stalk.
You could probably tear stuff off until there was nothing but a metal shell for the scrappers to haul away.
