Hello, I recently got an offer of $1000 best offer (original price $1200) for a large Hobart Salad dryer. I had in the listing that it was free local pickup. When I got the offer I got excited and accepted the offer but, later realized that the customer wants the item shipped to Colorado. I decide to look into freight shipping it to Colorado and told the buyer that it would be extra for shipping, which he seems to be ok with. This would be my first freight shipment, which I am excited to try. I did some research on the buyer which I found some red flags. First of all the buyer has zero feedback, I sell to lots of people with zero feedback but, with the value of this item I am a little hesitant. Also I couldnt find any info on the company and the location seem to be a newly built commercial property. It could be the company is just starting and that info is not available yet. I am pretty sure I am going to cancel the order. Any advice?

These don’t seem like huge red flags to me, but you have to rely on your instincts. The main concern I would have in this situation is whether you would be protected by Ebay if you ship the item. The issue is that shipping was not included in the sale, and now you have to add it. I suggest you call Ebay and ask if you can add shipping and still be protected if you ship to the buyer’s listed address.
The biggest surprise for me in this whole thing is that there exists a contraption that costs over $1000 whose sole purpose is to dry salad!!

@Sharyn Thanks for the reply, zero feedback doesnt bother me much but, I looked up the street view of the buyer’s address and it is an open field. I can’t find anything on the buyer’s business name, not even on the government websites. I cant find anything on the individual as well. Chances are they just built a facility there, he just got his business name, and he just got his ebay account but, Im not willing to take a chance. All he would have to do is say it doesnt work and then I would have to give him a partial refund or pay the return shipping of a couple hundred dollars. I had something similar happen to me with a large printer. As for the price, anything Hobart brings big bucks. There were a few of the same Hobart dryers going for $2000 or more on ebay. They are heavy duty, stainless steel, commercial grade items. Also, he hasnt paid yet so I dont have a problem canceling the order and just relisting it, there is someone out there that is closer and would make for an easier transaction.
@Jay Thanks for the reply. I’ll definitely take down those links for future reference. Maybe Ill give my buyer the links and see what he says. I was just listening to the most recent podcast and I was about the comment on the video but, I might as well just do it here. Jay I would totally vote for you for office. I can totally see your slogan in the front of your podium when you give speeches “Give Yourself a Raise”. And you can say stuff like “Ask not what your country can do for you but, what you can sell on Ebay!” Alright man take care.-

I had the impression that he had already paid, so your thought process makes a bit more sense. You’ve also been bit before, so I get that. I’m not aware of anything more you could do, but you still can call Ebay first to get their help before you cancel. Who knows, perhaps they will have some insight into your situation.

I called ebay today and they said either try to arrange a shipment or cancel the order. But, they said the accepted offer will be void after 48 hours if payment is not received. Does that sound right? But, if I cancel the order I wont get my listing fee back, dun dun dunnnnn!

Yep, if you allow “make offer”, then the buyer has 48 hours to pay. Then it takes another five days for it to be automatically cancel and relist.

Just to put a finer point on it…
You can open an Unpaid Item case after 2 days, and then the buyer has 4 days that they can make payment. After 4 days, then you can close the case and manually relist the item…

Is there any benefit to letting it cancel on its own. Will I get any mark on my account by ebay if I cancel it now manually before the buyer pays?

I believe if you cancel the transaction on your own, you will gat a defect. If you sell enough, not a big deal. Why not just give it a couple days?
Again, if I understand correctly, the item is “local pickup”. You absolutely have zero responsibility to ship it.

Cool Ill just wait it out and let it all happen automatically so I dont get a defect on my account. Thanks

Again, for more clarification, it will not happen automatically.
After 48 hours, you have to manually open an Unpaid Item Case. eBay does not do that for you.
Then, 4 days after you open the Unpaid Item Case, you have to manually close the case, and then manually relist the item.
I just want to make sure you are clear that you have to do the steps on this, nothing happens automatically.

Tsatt is correct.
–If the buyer never pays and you do not open an unpaid item case, nothing ill happen.
–If you open an unpaid item case, eBay automatically closes it after 30 days.
–If you open an unpaid item case, you can manually close the case after 5 business days.
–Once closed, you get your fees back and can relist. -

If the buyer never pays and you dont open an unpaid item case, does Ebay still charge you a final value fee?

That’s a great question. I have no idea.

Yes.
On our Dicken’s Village Sale, we have had to pay the $250 Final Value fee even though EBay does not show it as paid.
PS-We will be paid back once the sale is final.

I looked into it and yes once you accept an offer, ebay charges you the final value fee even if the payment was not received. I just looked on my account for the fee and there it was a final value free for the Hobart dryer.

Jay,
This is a good learning opportunity for me. I have not had this kind of situation. If the buyer insists on shipping (since it has already been brought up) and he pays, how you would address that knowing what has been shared about the buyer?
-

If the item was sold as :local pick up”, then I would tell the buyer he’s responsible for pick up. I would direct him to different shipping companies and say I’m happy to meet their preferred shipper. Once the shipper picks it up, then the responsibility is no longer mine.
We are experimenting with handling shipping large items, but we’re also adding a large fee on the item to cover our costs. After a number of experiments, we feel comfortable dealing with shippers.

Easy answer. They purchased it as local pickup. Stick to that. The buyer can arrange shipping themselves. You are simply responsible for giving it to the shipper of their choice…then you’re free and clear.
Tell them to arrange shipping at http://usip.com or https://www.plycongroup.com/freequote.html. or a shipper of their choice.

I would agree to discuss with eBay just to understand what protections you have with their policy.
Overall, work with the buyer to provide information on how they can arrange shipping or whatever else they need.
I would boil it down to providing professional customer service…and knowing your risks.
I would think that if you provide shipping documentation via eBay (as well as keeping a copy for yourself), you are protecting yourself against an eBay Undelivered case, as well as a PayPal Undelivered case.

Good answers all around.
Still, my plastic salad spinner seems so inadequate now ….

I just want to offer- trust your gut. If something is telling not to continue then don’t.
As far as losing the listing fee, spilt the cost of it in the listing price of 2 new items. Go list and make some sales and money.
Be careful how much time you spend on this. The more time spent on this questionable sale, the less time you have to list other items and keep moving forward.

Hello, just wanted to follow up about the salad dryer. I was able to sell it to a local Chick-a-fil restaurant owner through ebay. It fit in my car and I just delivered it myself, only 1 hour drive. I felt good about the transaction.
