An item I sold via Global shipping turned out to have a manufacturing defect. I authorized a return, because it was an expensive item and I wasn’t sure whether I was being scammed. Anyway, the item was returned and it turned out to be defective.
My questions are:
Do I just refund the money paid to me (ie. the item cost and domestic shipping to Kentucky)?
Will Ebay refund the amount the customer paid to them for international shipping/duties?
Who pays for return shipping?Thank you!

If it ends up being a defect, Ebay wipes its hands free of it. At least, that is what happened to me one time. They only cover it if it breaks in transit from KY to the international address.

We had a similar situation as well with a GSP item.
Buyer said the item was not as described.
We just accepted the return.
Buyer mailed it back on their dime.
eBay then just required us to refund for the item plus shipping to the eBay warehouse.-

What happened in your case?

It was a silly thing for someone to buy through the GSP, really. It was a vintage cold pack – one of those things that you put water and ice in when you have sore muscles or something like that. It was less than $15; I don’t remember the exact price.
I thought I had tested it with water, but would I have had them ship it back so that I could prove them wrong? Ebay said that they would not be involved with a defective item, so I had a choice to have them ship it back or refund. I decided to refund.

That’s reasonable. We refunded too. eBay just doesnt seem to have a system in place for GSP returns so they do seem to wash their hands of it.

Thank you for the responses. It is useful to get answers here, as I find Ebay support don’t always give correct information.
I did call Ebay as well and the answer they gave was:
Seller refunds cost of item plus original shipping to Ebay warehouse.
Ebay refunds the international element of the shipping.
Seller is responsible for return shipping cost. With hindsight I should of just refunded without asking for the item to be returned.
Thanks again!

I sold a large item to Canada. It was defective. I thought it was new. Ebay told me I had to provide a shipping label. I have no way of providing a Canada Post label and I wasn’t gonna force my customer to deal with it. I refunded in full and yes I also was required to refund the GSP shipping as well. This was a year ago.
I felt bad for the person because it was a Christmas present.

We had that this week as well, and we aren’t GSP.
Buyer wants to return a sweater from Canada, I missed a picture, so I’m paying for it. But I can’t provide the label since it is international. So we are going to handle by reimbursing them for the shipping amount they have to pay (in addition to the original price).
eBay doesn’t have a contract with other countries for shipping FROM them TO us. They do with US to THEM via USPS, FedEx, UPS, but the origination country is the starting point for the postage, and they would have to have hundreds of contracts for every country to get that done.
