Interesting paragraph towards the end:
eBay is firmly entrenched in the resale market — a sector that, according to research firm Fung Global Retail & Technology, is growing 20 times faster than retail overall, and could hit $33 billion by 2021. Industry research has also found that younger shoppers are taking to second-hand shopping faster than Gen X or Baby Boomers. Perhaps eBay’s energy would be best spent leaning into its long-held reputation and innovating in that space. Competing with Amazon on the “new” end of the retail spectrum is futile, but they could credibly fight off threats from startups like The Real Real and Poshmark. Many still believe eBay is the best option for vintage treasures, so why not own it? For now, though, the company has its sights set on pushing in the other direction, emphasizing the supposed shiny newness of what their sellers offer.

That is a good paragraph. I think all these sites are scrambling for the same pool of sellers who are simply buying the same new products from the same factories to resell.
I also liked this paragraph:
“The eBay site hasn’t really gone through dramatic levels of change since the beginning, and if there was any change, it was subtle and not slick enough,” says Sean Maharaj, a director at global management consulting firm AArete. “The customer interface, the website, it is not on par with some other companies that are coming at this with a new digital strategy. It’s unfriendly and it’s not easy to navigate.”
Their clunky website is the biggest turn off to new buyers IMHO.

I for one am thinking about eBay daily. In the business world, I guess they are constantly looking at sales growth and that equals relevance? I don’t know anywhere else where I can get my kid a pair of baseball cleats that he probably will grow out of before the end of the season for 15 bucks shipped to my door? The exact cleats he likes and knows and loves and they are already broke in and not broke! We are the ones who can help ourselves by talking about eBay and pumping it up. Is Amazon going to take over the world?

Thanks for the article, Christine.
One thing we can all do to help ebay is to do more of our own shopping on ebay. Personally, I would rather buy ANYWHERE but Amazon, as I consider them the enemy. -

nobody thinks about ebay…except the 171 million users shopping and selling on it daily.

Ryanne—LOL! My thoughts exactly. The headline overstates the author’s case by a huge magnitude. No doubt it’s true that ebay is no longer the hot new thing everyone’s talking about, but it remains a huge site with an active buyer and seller base. They added another 2 million buyers this quarter. That ain’t peanuts.

It’s difficult to compare eBay in 1995 to 2017. Back then they had no competition. Now its easy to build a website that sells stuff.

Easy to build a website, but not easy to get the traffic!
