So I’ve had a run of seriously embarrasing goofs lately, with complete, somewhat humorous, corrective steps that were attempted:
1. I listed a brown-tone crocheted The Sak handbag one afternoon and saw an app notice that it had already sold the next morning! So I shipped it right away with a big smile. A couple of weeks later the SAME handbag sold–why??? I investgated only to learn that I had sold and shipped my OTHER very COLORFUL The Sak crocheted handbag before. Strangely, the customer had apprently never noticed! Not a word of complaint! So here I was with the colorful handbag and a sale of the brown-toned one–what to do? I figured that if I at least sent SOMETHING I wouldn’t get a defect for canceling the sale, and when the customer complained I would apologize profusely and tell her to just keep it since I didn’t have the correct one anymore. Then she wouldn’t give me a neg since she at least got a free handbag. Right? Weird thing: THAT customer never complained either!!! So that was altogether fortunate.
2. Shortly after that the same thing happened when I shipped a very purple men’s Nike polo shirt to someone who had ordered my very yellow one! The person who bought the yellow one but got the purple one never complained! (Obviously I need to stop packing and shipping before I’m awake enough to actually READ THE DETAILS of each sale.) I only realized this when, of course, the very bright purple one sold! So I thought I’d try the same solution and I just sent the bright yellow one to the buyer of the very purple one. I waited for the complaint to come–and waited–and it never came! How weird is that???
3. Not to be outdone by my own ineptitude, after this I had 2 almost identical tapestry tote bags, one with a dog print and one with a cat print. I sold the dog print bag to someone and–you guessed it–I inadvertently grabbed and shipped the CAT print one. 😬 (Is that not the worst thing you could ever do to a dog lover?) Fortunately I caught that mistake the next day and notified the buyer that I was shipping her the correct bag right away. I also asked her to please not open the first one and just mark it “REFUSED–RETURN TO SENDER” and she sweetly complied. I received it back today with NO postage required for the return.
Isn’t it amazing how things turn out well sometimes in spite of our mistakes? LOL!

I’ve made my share of mistakes, so I usually hold the item up to the picture on my computer screen to make sure I have the right thing.
I’m glad it worked out for you, Linda!-

Yeah I double check against listing pictures on my phone if there is a question. With shoes I always include a picture of the size tag in the listing and compare it to the shoes just in case I have ended up with multiples of the same style in different sizes/ color variants.

I sell a lot of “similar” or the same items and label each one with a code in the item description and put each item in a Ziploc with the same code on it to prevent shipping one that is similar, but slightly different.
I’ve been on the other end when I’ve purchased items that were not exactly what I ordered – and I wasn’t too happy! Especially if I have paid custom fees that are not refunded by eBay.

I’ve been lucky so far and have only made one mistake. I relisted an item that I already sold (not sure how I did that) and someone purchased it. I had to refund the buyer and take a defect for cancelling a sale for being out of stock.

Thanks for all the tips–I will start making those changes. Right now I’m visiting a friend in Florida and it’s cooler than St. Louis! 😊 It’s good to take a break now and then and go home refreshed.
