Killer D&D game sale, Steven!
My interesting sales this week:
c1960s Boston Red Sox Warmup Jacket
Bought this 2 weeks ago at an estate sale for $10. I knew it was nice on the spot, but didn’t realize what I had until researching. Made in the USA, Twin Enterprises, and the style of the logo dated it to the mid 1960s. Sold for full price, $200.(4) 1968 The Beatles Yellow Submarine Buttons
Bought these for $20 because they were in pristine condition and thinking because they were true vintage that they’d go for more. Sold for $40 best offer.1984 Prince Purple Rain LP SEALED

Another type of item I pick up at estate sales all the time for $1 or so. These don’t sell fast, but they do go for $25-$35 all the time – sometimes around Halloween, sometimes to costume/production houses. These are headed to a playhouse in North Carolina, but have sold similar gloves to Amazon/The Man in the High Castle, and NBC/Aquarius.-
That Weber pipe is awesome! I would be ecstatic if I got that at an estate sale for only $10. I collect tobacco pipes myself. They always go for way too much anytime I see them at auctions.

Yeah, I pick up pipes anytime I see them, especially in cheap box lots or something. Rarely do I find a NOS version like this and was pretty pleased that it was only $10. As a collector, did I let it go for too low? The buyer was ecstatic to find it and for this price… called this model his “white whale” that he could never find/get.

I think you priced it just right. Weber pipes were along the same vein as Dr. Grabow pipes you see nowadays. Sort of the working man’s pipe sold at drugstores. The charm of yours was that it was unsmoked and still had it’s original box after all these decades.

That’s so awesome that you’re parting out speakers that most people would have just thrown away. And getting great money for it too! Here’s my highlights from last week…
RCA Field Technician’s Box that I paid way too much for at an auction… $17. It turned out to be not what I thought it would be. But I took a best offer of $28 so it wasn’t a loss.
1950’s Travel Map of Geneva, Switzerland. I got this in a box lot of ephemera. Lots of other travel maps and postcards came from that box. After separating everything of value, this map ended up costing $4.25 total. I sold it for $25 to someone in Singapore.
Here’s the Sony Walkman Cassette Player I sold for a best offer of $85. In my research, I found that Walkman’s are priced all over the map depending on the model. This one was rare apparently. I bought it at an estate sale for $5.00.
Finally, I resold an American Keyless Lock Company Padlock that was returned to me. The first buyer just said that it wouldn’t work. I’m not a lock expert, so I took his word for it. Refunded him and listed it the same day for $70 with full disclosure that it wasn’t working. It sold an hour later for BO of $60. I originally paid $5.00 for it at an auction.

I’ve been picking up old Walkmans & Discmans a lot lately if they’re cheap. Any should sell for $20-$30, but I’ve been able to score big twice (got a WM-7 Walkman for $3 that sold for $250 and a D-88 Discman for $5 that sold for $185 in non-working condition).

These brand new Key Denim large size were a good sale for us about $8.00 at the Goodwill picked up 2 and have sold both of them now for $40.50
Another nice one was these Crate & Barrel champagne flutes picked up 8 of them at $1.99 each and been selling them in sets of 2 for $40.00
Most recent sale this Boy Scout Men’s shirt with some patches, my thought I had it priced low at $25.00 sold within a day, but i will take it. Picked it up for $3.50 at Goodwill

My little water color by a local artist sold today. I had listed for $100 and accepted a best offer of $50:
This raggedy old geography book sold, too. It is literally falling apart. I’m betting someone wants the old maps in it for a project. This came out of a giant box of Victorian-era books for $5. I’ve made at least $200 off that box by now.
Brass and Glass curio. I bought this one and 2 other different shaped curios for $25. One of the others sold for $70, the other for $40 (I think), and this one for $35.

The scavenger gods were smiling upon me today. This morning I was invited in attic, basement and garage of a house whose contents were being loaded into a dumpster. Way more stuff than I can haul away in a few hours, but picked up some valuable vintage stereo and DJ components, vintage colecovision consoles and tandy 128k computers, healthkit stuff, etc. Got an AKAI reel-to-reel, a couple rare Sansui components, and a Technics SL-1200MK2 turntable and much more. To think this was all heading into a dumpster!

That’s incredible! I’m really jealous you were able to score all those electronics for free. How did the invitation to come and help yourself to all that stuff come about?
I’m always seeing those soda thermometers and advertising at auctions and they always go for waaay more than I’d pay for them. It’s a shame cause I wouldn’t mind owning some.

Hi Doublythumbs. It was my neighbor. He knows I scavenge and sell stuff and thought of me. He’s doing a cleanout at his aunt’s house. Her husband passed away and was a DJ and quite the vintage techie. They didn’t want any money for any of it, but I plan to give them some money if I make money on it.
I am going to have a hard time sleeping tonight thinking about all the stuff that went into the dumpster today which I couldn’t save. This happens everywhere, everyday. Glad I could spare some of it from the landfill, and with some luck, be able to pass it along to a new home.

It really does happen more often than people realize. I, too, recently saved some nice audio equipment from going into the trash. Where I work, they needed to clear an old videography classroom to make room for more offices. The maintenance crew were given the orders to just throw everything in the dumpster. I’m lucky to have caught wind of the order before they could give it the ol’ chuck. You should have seen the looks they gave me as I was digging around in all the big black trash bags full of equipment. A lot of the stuff didn’t work after I brought it home and tested it. I’ll still part them out and make a killing. But my prize was an Otari reel to reel player that works perfectly! I’m probably going to hang on to that for a long while.
But that was really swell of your neighbor to let you in on all that equipment. Every now and then it helps that people know you’re a scavenger.
