Woohoo great sales Steve. Here is what I have been up to:
Been reposting a ton of books on Amazon that somehow got deactivated and therefore not available for sale. It was probably caused when I stupidly experimented with their price changer. When I put them back on our home brewed one, it caused a conflict.
So the Amazon hamster deities deactivated them and I’m auditing that inventory now. ??
I know some hate Amazon, but we do our thing on it.

I’ve had a pretty good week this time. Here are some notables…
I mentioned on Monday about an ugly 1950’s Silvestri Bros oriental lamp. I acquired it from an auction for $32.50. I kinda went in blind on it not knowing anything about it except the year it was made and the maker engraved in the base. The gamble paid off, though. I ended up taking a best offer of $110.
1950’s Silvestri Bros LampNext was an antique stuffed dog. I bought him in a box lot with some other old toys. It amounted to about $2.50. I was going to throw him away actually but thought I might as well try. It took a few months but he sold for $30.
Antique Toy Stuffed DogNext was a cast iron gooseneck lamp. I always see these around and I usually pick them up if they’re cheap enough. But I’ve never seen a teal colored one before. I bought it at a yard sale last year for 50 cents. It sold for full price of $50!
Teal Eagle Cast Iron Gooseneck LampFinally, my favorite sale of the week. In a box lot of cheap costume jewelry, I found an old beat up piece of metal. Upon closer inspection, I noticed engraving on the surface. Turns out what I had was a piece of trench art. Someone turned what I think was an artillery shell casing into a bracelet and engraved the location and a date. I looked up Trench Art bracelets and sure enough, it’s a thing. A very profitable thing, too. Since mine was pretty beat up, I decided on the auction format. It shot up at the last few seconds and sold for $54. I paid about $5 for it.

These cup and saucers were brought back with GI’s after the war, they are pretty common with just the plain geisha, but the topless version is rarer–picked up at a thrift store about a week ago for .99 and sold for $45
I bought a tray of games/game pieces at auction a few months back and have made good money on the items. This is the second group of bakelite dice I sold from the lot, it went for $45 (some people on ebay literally give such items away, I thought that I could do better with them and did!)

Sheldon Finlay is posting videos again on his YouTube channel. Great to see him back. If you want to see packing look like an art you will love them, plus his What Sheldon Sold videos. He finds things in the northeast just don’t have here in the midwest.

Yes. We have tons of antiques here in the midwest but theybare not the colonial type that you see in the northwest. I would be surprised if there are any antiques at all on the western coast. I would hate trying to scavenge there. What do you find?

Here are a few of my interesting sales – or, at least interesting stories – from last week:
Over 6 yards of nice upholstery fabric – I listed over 10 remnants in the summer, and this is the second to sell. The first sold only last week. Perhaps folks are getting ready to do projects for the spring. I paid about $1.50, sold for $41.60:

I bought an incomplete set of this pattern at my first auction, and I listed them in April last year. I tried selling them by the piece, selling them in sets, putting them on sale, etc, etc. These are the first to sell since I added best offer. I’ve also sold some bowls yesterday (although they have yet to pay). Best offer rocks!! I paid a $4 and they sold for $30.

I had some good sales this week. Here are a few of the better ones:
The Lilly, vintage Lilly Pulitzer dress from the 1960s, purchased during the final hour of an estate sale for $1. Had a ton of discoloration on it due to age. I soaked it in the washing maching using Biz (much better than Oxyclean!) and then dried it in the sun, lying it across the grapevines (hooray for photosynthesis – nature’s bleach!) It removed almost all of the yellowing. Listed for quite awhile at $199, took best offer of $150.
Vintage Boy Scouts neckerchief with rare patch from a local troop, dated circa 1950s-60s. Purchased the entire uniform for $1 at estate sale and listed into 2 lots. Sold this piece within hours of listing for $199.99.
Child’s bedding set purchased from a discount store for $39.99 and sold for $119.99.
Ralph Lauren Duck Pheasant Shirt, purchased for $3.99 and had it listed for $89.99 for quite some time. Finally took a best offer of $45.
Ted Baker Sheath dress, purchased for $6.36 and sold within a few days for $70.

I had high hopes for these Gospel Bill VHS tapes, I was hoping to list at $200.00 for the lot of 31, but upon testing, the tapes played excellent and clean but upon rewinding they seemed like they dirtied the heads of the VHS player. I was going to just donate them back to GW, I paid a buck each. But i decided to list them explaining the issues, someone on the forums said there might be dust in the cases. This was my favorite (and highest priced) item to sell last week. It’s a pretty cool vintage photo album with photos in it from the 1930s, mostly from a CCC fire fighting operation. I especially like the photo of the guy with 2 girls that has the names labeled as “Dame – Yours Truly – Dame.” It’s from Oregon and I quickly received 2 different offers, both from people in Oregon. I also purchased 3 or 4 other albums full of photos and a complete baby book from the same estate sale. I feel like I know the family, but I’m a little sad that their family didn’t want the photos!

I have a similar collection of family photos from the 30’s and 40’s but they are in an 80’s style album.-
Probably …it was a really cool album. But I’ve been looking at old photos a lot lately as I research them, and they can sell for a lot, depending on what they are. I think that these photos might have been desirable even though they weren’t amazing quality, since they were Forest Service / CCC related. But I’m guessing! I sold another album from the same sale this week, for $150, but it was 1920s photos. I’ll post that one next week!

I have to post that my best item so far this week was a Steve inspired item! I got a Memorex tabletop stereo a couple of years ago for $3-4 at a yard sale and we’d originally been using it to listen to books on cd. We weren’t using it anymore because I have an iPad and my husband has a kindle. I decided to give it a try and it sold today for $30. Thank you Steve!

I have an idea that could make you some additional money and help out a lot of scavengers.
My idea is Steve’s Stereo Institute. You could offer a hands on course on how to acquire, fix, and ship stereo equipment, etc. You could host it a hotel near you or do a web meeting. You could charge like $100 per student for the hands on or less for a web meeting.
Not sure if this is something that interests you, but I know I would be interested in learning more about what you do.

steve, The album would have sold for a decent price on its own…its really neat souvenir album. But if it had been in terrible shape, I think it would have sold for the same amount because of the photos themselves. The more information you can provide about the photos in an album (or individual photos) the better, but mostly its the images that make the sale.

did you research your singer at all? according to your serial number, it’s from 1891. that’s the earliest singer i’ve ever seen, but you didn’t title it as such. might have been a bigger sale there. although i realize you sold as untested too. but i’ve never seen one that old or with that floral pattern before.

I did a little but didn’t have a lot of luck. This is actually the 4th time I have sold it. It’s cursed so I just wanted to get rid of it. I sold it once and the person sent it back to me because it didn’t work but I got them to pay for shipping and I clearly say it’s damaged etc. The other two times were non payers one of which was a guy with the last name Singer from NYC. After I got the offer this time the person said they would pay asap so I said get it out of here.

Holy Cow!! As soon as I saw this I ran out to the storage area and went all the way to the end and dug out of a few odd left over piles from where we closed down those 6 antique booths. We have a Singer machine just like this one, with that floral pattern and all AND it is even older. The serial number is 6740352 which the Singer web site lists all it’s serial numbers and says ours is Circa. 1885. We have had it at the booths from July 2013 until last fall when we pulled everything out to transfer everything to online venues. I left it out there because it is somewhat oily,certainly dusty and is heavy so I figured I would leave it until we got through all the “smalls” from the booths.
To dirty to handle and photo right now, but looks like this is something we will be cleaning up tomorrow to get listed.
What a coincedence that this conversation popped up. Thanks for the $1,000 reminder tip. LOL 🙂

Hey Ryanne: Better late than never. The old Singer Sewing machine was pretty dirty and greasy, and wife Susan just wasn’t in the “let’s get all dirty and clean this thing” mood last week. But we finally did, used Simple Green. Didn’t want to disturb any of the paint or acidentilly shine the brass and lose any patina.

http://imgur.com/F9Jtg7LIt was / is hard to tell the exact serial number but we went with G 7403528. The Singer site puts it around 1883-1885.
We got the whole thing for $75 at a local auction. We sold the base off of it a few years ago for $125, then we took the machine out of the wood base, disassembled everything and sold the 4 drawers for $40 each. So up to this point we got $285 total out of it. So now we have this main sewing unit up for $485 BO and maybe someone at a museum or someone needing parts for refurbish will step up to the plate. Thanks for the input Ryanne. Yep you are correct. We have edited the listing to state the 1919 date and added the “Red Eye” pattern.
My wife said she thinks that when we first ran a check on it about 3 years ago we couldn’t make out that the first character was the letter “G” or the number “6”. I think we thought it was a number six and looked it up on the actual Singer site and pegged it as to the 1885 date, prior to the use of the “letters” they used later. Now that it is cleaned up it is easier to see that the first character is the letter “G” not a “Six”. Thanks for bringing that to our attention.
Now that it is 34 years newer, do you think we should back off on that $495 list price or let it ride and see what offers may come in?

I purchased this Wii controller at Goodwill retail for $2.12 and it sold for $8.75 shipped. Not a very smart purchase in hind-sight, but I did not have cell reception to look up the value at the store. So at least I didn’t lose money – lesson learned though.
I purchased this set of books last year during Amazon Prime Days for $31.79 and it sold for $52.47 shipped.
I got this in a bin full of old albums that somebody was giving away on Craig’sList. They were damp from either rain or the basement – took a bit of cleaning up and then listening to them all – quite a bit of work for very little profit. Still they were free, and for starting out, it is the price I had to pay. So FREE sold for $11.25 shipped.
I got this Dell docking station at Goodwill retail for $2.12 and it sold for $23.50 shipped.
I got this (and about 90 others) in an old book that was paperbound and the binding had come undone and was being held together with duct tape. I bought it at a flea market for $8. The cost for this one page was $.90 and it sold for $10.95 shipped.
That’s all I have unfortunately. I haven’t yet mastered how to get a larger number of sales. My sell through rate is around 10-11%. My goal this month is to list more than my free allotment and see if the % remains the same.
