Hello, new here!
I have a 27″ iMac i just sold. I still have the original box it came in (with awesome foam molding and such). I have no idea how to ship this though. Is it generally ok to ship in a big box that says “iMac” all over it? Which service would probably be best? I would like a signature confirmation obviously, the value is ~$500 now. Any ideas?
Thanks so much!

I’d go USPS Priority, insured for $500, plus signature confirmation. That way it won’t be sitting on your buyer’s front porch asking to be stolen. Might be minor inconvenience for your buyers but getting it stolen is more than inconvenient.

If I was shipping it, I would box it in the original box and then box that in a second box to 2) protect it and 2) disguise it. I use USPS all the time, so I’d ship it priority mail with $500 insurance and signature confirmation.
Nice sale!

Depending on the distance, you may want to go with FEDEX Ground.
You also may want to put the original box inside another padded box. The mainstream mail can be pretty rough on an item.
Don’t forget insurance.. Good Luck.

Thanks for the replies everyone! I’ll be looking for a box to put around it, just so it’s not screaming (COMPUTER HERE!!) for everyone. I’m already seeing I should have charged more for shipping (charged $35.00). Insurance, signature confirm, and 37 lbs to Vermont right now is at ~$47 via USPS Priority large package.
The box right now is at 104″ girth + length, so I’ve only got 4″ to spare with a surrounding box for it. If I can’t find a close fit box, I may just be shipping the mac box. They’d literally have to put a fork lift through the box in order to damage this thing with how Apple packages everything “just so”.
Still very nervous about it though. Thanks again!

You can always wrap it in brown paper.
Based on the size, FEDEX Ground may save you a lot. Also Printing your label through Ebay generates pretty good discounts through most of the carriers.
Length X Width X Height needs to be 1728 or less, otherwise it’s oversize for USPS.

In my mind as long as it’s signature confirmation it could have “WADS OF HUNDRED DOLLAR BILLS” printed on the box and it would make no difference. If the buyer has to sign for it, it’s going to get there.

Awesome. Thanks again. FedEx was only saving me ~$3, and it’s worth that to me not to have to drive to my nearest fedex pickup. I did verify LxWxH for USPS and it’s within spec. Thanks for that.
The more I think about it, the more I’m deciding not to sweat it as much as I was. I bought insurance, signature confirmation, etc. Both the buyer and I are as protected as we can be. If something goes wrong, I refund him, go through the process and EVENTUALLY get my cash for the sale regardless. I’m not hard-up for the money, so I can be patient as far as that process goes. Thanks for the tips everyone. You’ve helped me put myself a bit more at ease about it.

Why not just enter the size and weight into eBay and click on compare shipping costs?
And for what it is worth I would also put it inside a larger box
