I feel like I have been finding really good deals from my regular eBay consignment sellers, and I just realized while I was thinking about this post that it is probably because it’s tax season. They want to pay their tax bill, so all that unlisted inventory that’s been sitting in the queue needs to get listed. With more listings comes the potential for mistakes, steals, or listing something when it’s not the right time to sell. That’s when I pounce. That’s how I built my business and continue to do so. Lately it’s been cards, cards, cards in all sports and types, and that business has allowed me to transform my eBay store into more of an outlet for the other weird stuff I find than the place online where I sell absolutely everything.
Last Sunday, I snagged an item from an online auction for $10 that I would have typically expected to find at a local library sale. It was this autographed Lancaster PA 1952 baseball yearbook. The fact that the collector (or flipper) got the signatures authenticated is a tell that they knew it had some value, which is how it ended up with a consignor and not in some library’s annual sale. Most companies use a little hologram sticker that they affix to the back of the item and the best companies for autograph authentication (by far) are PSA, JSA and BAS. This is such a weird item that it’s hard that it may sit for a year. I’ll probably start at $100 and work my way down, and I’ll be shocked if I don’t find a buyer at $50. A nice margin for preserving a piece of 75+ year old history.
What did you find this week?

@Craig-Rex – I assume you know of MaxSold since you buy from online auctions, but I saw this one that is located in south Jersey, and it has lots of baseball and other sports stuff in it. At a quick glance, some of it is the 70s-80s stuff that isn’t worth much, but there are some non-card items you might be interested in. Again, you probably already know about it, but I wanted to make sure.

I only went to two yard sales last week and only bought 2 items but both are pretty good.
At the first sale I normally buy alot of stuff but the couple decided to price their stuff to the moon! The only item I bought was a complete set of Classique Belgique cookware for $85. Should sell for $250-$400 depending on if I part it out or sell individual pieces.
The next yard sale I bought a Carhartt jacket for 50 cents. Well first thing is that Carhartt canvas jackets are always BOLO if cheap enough. The thing you want to look for is an unusual interior lining. If it is plaid flannel or an unusual color you just found gold. In this case the lining was a red quilted lining and the tag is an older tag. I’ll be selling this jacket for $100-200.
Here’s a sold listing in similar condition

Last week I was only able to make one trip to Goodwill. I got a few bread n butter items but the real standout was I FINALLY found a Liquid Blue T shirt in the wild! It’s a newer one with the printed tag (Boo!) but still an amazing shirt. If you’ve never heard of Liquid Blue, you should do a quick ebay solds search. They are THE grail of t-shirt selling.
The one I got is a modern reprint of this design:

And since I’ll have forgotten by the time next week’s thread comes up I’ll share yesterday’s goodwill run. The shoe department was a strike-out but the mens clothing section was a BOON! I got multiple pair of jeans/pants in the $50 range for $4.50 each. Then in the coat section I found not one, but three vintage Woolrich jackets. I haven’t researched them yet, but I’m in for at least $100 each. This goodwill doesn’t mark up jackets/coats, so I just paid $6.99 each.
As I was in the checkout I saw a V-tech cordless phone system abandoned in the snack bin. I’ve had luck with these and was stuck in line so I checked it out. The seal looked like someone had picked at it so I went ahead and opened it – yep, new in box. This is a nicer one and has a near 100% 90 day STR at $75. I paid $7. That’s a nice unexpected score!

@Retro thanks for the clothing tips. I don’t ever find Carhartt but I know the kids are looking for them. Seems like vintage Levis and I just saw a great Reel on how to analyze the tags. Beyond that I’m starting to get a feel for what they like…

The things to look for in vintage levis, Lee, or Wrangler.
- paper tag with the older ink printing.
- Made in USA
- Selvedge denim(white/red seam on inside of leg seam.)
- Talon 42 zipper
- And the big bucks – if the e on the red tab is a capital E you just won the lottery.
Even newer premium jeans are made with selvedge denim – it’s still made in Japan. If you see Polo Ralph Lauren jeans (A- you should buy them anyways) you should always check inside the leg opening for a selvedge seam.
One last thing – if you find a true vintage NWT cotton clothing item that is black, you might want to consider not buying it. In the 80s- 2000’s manufacturers used sulfur based dyes. If the clothing item was never washed it will literally fall apart the first time it is washed or worn. I’ve had it happen to two pair of Vintage NWT Levi’s black jeans.
That’s never a good message to get from a customer that their pants suddenly looked like they went through a nuclear bomb.

Sulphur Black 1 (Sulfur black BN) dyeing can not be stored for too long, because the dye on the dyed material has unstable sulfur, and it is oxidized by air to produce sulfuric acid under humid heat conditions, so that the fabric is brittle, so it is not suitable to oxidize with oxidant, otherwise it will accelerate …
(a bite-sized quote- Firefox wouldn’t let me access the whole page- a company called Emperor Dye)

I created the listing for one of the Woolrich coats today. It is a late 60’s/early 70’s Mackinaw Buffalo Plaid hunting coat. It is in IMMACULATE condition – I’m talking borderline NWOT.
Maybe worn once and definitely not hunting. Identical coats sell for $150-200 in used condition. I’m pricing mine at $250 due to the excellent condition.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/235531906124 Following up on the scavenge of last week, I listed this on FB marketplace for a bit less. It would pay for half my entire online auction lot and I got it for $13 along with two other suitcases (one I’m keeping). Nobody in my house can get into a bag this small.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/235531890707 This also came inside a lucite drawer I got at the action for pennies.
I went to yard sales on Saturday. Things were overpriced at this one, but I got this item for $5. Always ask the younger guy vs. the older woman for a price. https://www.ebay.com/itm/235531883418
This item came from an estate sale were I arrived late. It was at the bottom of an empty box. I don’t want to know what I missed in that box. https://www.ebay.com/itm/235524386716
Speaking of misses, the thrift store ladies were wondering why the person in front of me who snagged a huge lot of Ken Edwards pottery didn’t take these. Crap. Why do they have to mention? https://www.ebay.com/itm/335362843819 Not that I don’t have plenty of stuff.
I got several other incredible finds at the yard sales – a huge vintage fly Rio print in a gorgeous frame for $5, a vintage soda crate for my live sale display for $20, a tall Vietnamese nursery pot for $20 (to keep), a gorgeous rattan folding chair for the market for $5, a leather Patricia Nash bag for $10.
Bottom line there is so much sourcing available. However the vintage clothing is pretty tapped at the thrift store level for sure. I have a lot of stuff on hand to deal with so I’m wrapping my head around leveling up. Running a clearance sale on some less desirable Ebay stuff.
