This week offers a positive outlook for my store’s continued growth in 2024. By all the numbers, I should have had a really slow week of sales. Even though it was the week before a holiday, which meant the potential for strong sales early in the week. People’s minds might wander away from online shopping once estimated shipping times push past Christmas, but this should be a decent week for almost any online seller.
But I haven’t been listing consistently this month. Despite a glut of sold inventory ready to list (photos and all), I’ve been making only a few listings a day or (often) none. This has sort of been planned. After my most recent batch of auctions ended Monday the 10th, I went through all my inventory. Culled the low performers, repriced, relist and strategized for the next batch of auctions which I’ll start on Sunday, December 31st. Until then, I figured I would live off of the unsold listings showing up as “new” listings, especially since many of them had new prices.
I also ran a 25 percent off sale through last Wednesday, trying to pick up sales in the last days before Christmas. Often you can do all these different things and they don’t do much. But I had a decent week of sales. My inventory dwindled down to 300 listings and even below it over the last week. Net sales were similar to my 2022 numbers, which is a surprise since my store is much smaller now. 22 items sold, which is way above the rate I expect. Most importantly, I spent some good time late last week doing a photography session (for bulky items) and a scanning session (for individual trading cards and curated team lots), so I was able to set up a bunch of listings over the last few days. Starting the last week of 2023 on a good note!
Predictably, the most expensive item from Thursday’s photo shoot, a wholesale lot of 48 graded sports cards, sold over the weekend for $350. Get that stuff listed, folks. It’s taken me the bulk of this year to figure out how to make these larger lots profitable, but I think this will be the innovation that makes me an extra $5000 (or more?) in 2024 as long as I list them consistently.
My best innovation of 2023 was my curated 10 card team lots. Over 400 sold in 2023, including 9 this week. I’ve started pricing “better” lots at $40 which gives me more room to negotiate. I think a lot of these buyers are collectors and they like best offer or a coupon. I have improved a lot at making these lots as I’ve figured out the formula so they sell quickly. But still so more to learn! Some teams I can barely keep in stock and others I can’t sell at all.
I sold a Michael Moorer signed boxing glove during my 25% off sale and a day later, sold an Oliver McCall signed glove for nearly the same price. I had bought both from one of my favorite consignment sellers, this guy in Oklahoma who I’ve talked to once or twice on the phone. I paid $6.49 for the Moorer and my net was $22.29. I paid $12.09 for the McCall and my net was $23.17.
What did you sell this week?

Thought to ponder – have you considered building a brand and doing Whatnot?
You have all the skills and knowledge in a niche that is tailor made for whatnot. If you can get a channel going over there you can really churn through some product and get ebay prices most of the time.

UNDERTALE Gold Locket Limited Collector’s Edition Nintendo Switch
First off, if you haven’t played this game you should! It’s unlike anything you’ve ever played. Anyways, my daughter wanted one of these collectors editions for the gold locket and soundtrack. I bought a few extra to resell since they are hard to come by. This was the last one I finally sold. Basically doubled my money after fees.

Nintendo 64 Expansion Pak N64 Red and Black Memory Pack Original Authentic OEM
Sold for full price. Pro tip – if you ever pick up a Nintendo 64 to resell, pop open that little door in front of the cart slot and check for this bad boy. N64’s originally came with a jumper pack in this spot and the expansion memory was added later for newer games. I bought a few jumper packs for like $4 each pre-emptively a while back so I was able to swap this out and sell separately.
