My numbers for this past week were good, especially compared to last year when I was dealing with some family health issues and eBay wasn’t always a priority. It is a nice reminder how the ebb and flow of your eBay business can change from year to year. I didn’t have a massive Q4 last year because I was more focused on being present for my family. I would have never had the opportunity to do that without eBay and this podcast, which changed my thinking about so many things. With Thanksgiving coming up, a big thanks to Jay and Ryanne for leading me down this amazing path. I’m very grateful.
I’m also thankful for a few big sales this past week, particularly one of the last bulky classical box sets from my Chicago haul. I still need to pack this monster up tomorrow, but the gross sale was $173.90 and my COGS was $50. I have to keep that healthy profit in mind as I fumble around with different sized boxes and fuss with bubble wrap and packing paper!
I also sold a smaller box set (in terms of the set’s volume, not number of discs) for $76 gross/$51 net despite an outer box which showed quite a bit of damage. $25 COGS I believe.
In the trading card world, though most of my individual cards go directly to consignment now, I still keep the most interesting and/or timely cards to sell on eBay. I’m fond of this cut signature booklet of 1930s Yankees outfielder Bob Meusel ($90 gross/$63 net/$35 COGS) since I think it’s a great example of an interesting modern sports card. I love sales like this because I had a good feeling this card would sell within a month as long as I priced it competitively and listed it well, and I was right.
But my big sale of the week was a bulk lot of 48 graded cards for $300. Average COGS for each card is between $2 and $4, so my $263 net feels really good. I think these types of listings — I also do very well with smaller lots curated by team which feature their popular players — will make up the bulk of my eBay card sales next year. It feels really exciting to develop a formula and build that pipeline. I am curious how many listings like these I can crank out over the next few weeks before Q4 starts to wind down. I have the inventory available, it’s just a matter of how much time I devote to new listings and how organized I can keep myself.
What did you sell this week?

https://www.ebay.com/itm/235220034492 I sold this find of the week from a few months back.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/235092507949 My highest sale was this signed art, paid $12 I think.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/235284865089 My favorite sale though was this cup that I bought at an estate sale for pennies. I was bummed when I went to list it and found it had a chip. Listed it anyway and here is the feedback: “Arrived safely. Will repair cup The Japanese way! Skip Lyman’s work is magical for me. Martha. ” How great is that?

@christiner There’s a couple of 50-minute-long YouTube videos by NHK (Japanese public broadcaster) entitled “The Unknown Master Of Restoration”. One of the items is (as far as I remember) a Korean bowl which had been repaired in the Japanese way- gold lacquer in the cracks. It gets broken apart and then repaired invisibly.
Some of the work comes close to expert-grade fakery (such as the celadon vase with missing handles).
