My previous post in this series was a great week of scavenging, the kind you hope for all year, but this week the encore is…not much.
A minor league bobblehead for $4 including shipping that I’ll list for $30. I’ve had no luck so far selling bobbleheads for close to my asking price, but for $4 I’ll give it another try.
A 1960s Washington Senators yearbook for $2 that will go into a pile of other old yearbooks to get listed as the weather gets colder. $20 items that require 5+ pictures to show condition aren’t my favorite things in the world to list, but there’s enough of a record in Terapeak of $20 sales to motivate me.
$15 for an autographed photo of young Carolina Panthers QB Matt Corral which is based on one of the most popular modern card insert sets, the Color Blast. These autographed photos are only available on the manufacturer Panini’s website for a limited time. This is my second Corral Color Blast auto, both purchased in the $20 range. Typically these signed photos sell for $50 and up — the Color Blast cards almost always go for $100 and up — but Corral is not expected to be a key player for his team this year. But he is only in his second pro year and was a high draft pick. I will list one of the two in the $50 range and see what happens.
Honestly the most profitable item I bought this week was probably these cardboard boxes for storing and shipping cards — my goal for August is to list 5 to 10 flat rate boxes full of a few hundred $1 to $10 cards sorted by sport, and see how much extra money I can bring in on top of my usual sales. These boxes are perfect for protecting those lower value cards, and I can fit 3 of these comfortably within a large flat rate box.
What did you find this week?

Well the big winner for me was this:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/266345381574
$60 at Goodwill yesterday. I opened it to make sure it was actually new. It looks like someone bought it and then never actually used it. The receipt and warranty info (from 2012) as well as all the inks and USB cable – all new – are in the box. Sold comps are around $700-800 new in box.
I got a sirius sm boombox that has a built in sub that sells for $80.
At the first sale I went to I bought a HUGE lot of Fiesta Ware for $50. Usually this stuff is super expensive at yard sales. I was one of their first customers at about 7:45. There were no prices. When I asked she started naming random prices from $3-$5 for each piece. I asked how much for all of it. She hemmed and hawed so I said “how about $50?” Sold!
I haven’t counted all the pieces but it is over 50 pieces – some of them unique ones that sell for more. I’d estimate the whole lot at around $500-700 listed value.
At the same sale I bought a HUGE lot of BJU homeschool curriculum for $50. They tried homeschooling- their kids didn’t like it so they went to a private school. We use BJU as well so we cherry picked/upgraded some of what we have and will sell the rest. Around $800-1000 list value. Complete subjects of BJU sell for around $100 each used.
Other than that some odds n ends like various $50+ shoes that aren’t worth going into detail. There was a sweet vintage satin jacket with some custom screen printing on it. I’ll probably list it for $100. Those always do well.

@Craig – how many cards to you typically put in one of your flat rate boxes?

Super great find from a family run estate sale that I stopped into late after seeing a friend. I bundled a bunch of items for $20. Always look up high and down low friends!
When I get through the piles I look forward to trying estate sales. It would be easy to catch @Retro’s fever after a couple of stops like this one. I’ll take better pictures later when my dining room is free. Got a reflection in the light box.

An example of professional picture-framing. Whoever paid to have this framed paid the equivalent of 30 dollars for the cards from a dealer (prices in pencil on the back) plus maybe 30 to 50 dollars for the framing. That’s this week’s scavenging (just recovered from my first and hopefully last bout of Covid)
