The downside to making eBay our “career” is sometimes feeling like we’re wasting our time. During the most productive period of lives, are we just selling junk online? Will we look back and think, what were we doing? Since we’re very frugal and avoid buying things just to buy them, how did we come to depend on people buying things from us every day? Are we adding value into the world?
We see how many new sellers hit that wall of feeling unexcited about their store. They realize that selling on eBay has become a grind and
can’t imagine selling long term. Many experienced sellers have stories
of burning out and quitting. There’s often a story of things feeling
pointless. This is why it’s important to be excited and proud about what
we scavenge for eBay. Making a quick buck on cheap junk is a short ride to nowhere.
In this podcast, we talk about how we have navigated these questions and built our business in a way that makes us feel valuable. Instead of choosing to sell cheap junk, we choose to scavenge well-made items. We choose to seek out things that will last another generation or longer. We explore what it is that makes things “special”. We especially love to find and sell items that are useful (tools) and beautiful (art). This is how we feel good about our business. We certainly don’t always get it right, but this is the philosophy that guides us.
And we always remember that selling things on eBay is the means, not the end. The whole point is to give us the opportunity to spend time on projects, spend time with people we like, spend time with each other, spend time the way we want to. And this includes spending time selling things that we think are valuable.
P.S. This is the that should last us a lifetime (and beyond).
